Garden hose

    Hi

I bought a garden hose and gun about a year ago for about 30 quid. Just use it for cleaning down the paving etc nothing major.

Finally died today, multiple holes in it etc, gone beyond patching.

So I am on the lookout for a new hose and gun set. from the brief reading I've done, people say to buy a rubber hose and one that's 5/8 of an inch with brass fittings, but maybe this is overkill for my needs.

I see there are these expandable ones too, but are these just a gimmick ?

I will be attaching it to a standard tap and need about 50ft.

Can anyone recommend a hose and gun ?

I have a expandable hose and think they are very good, very light and handy. The only fault ai find is they can come off the ends giving you a dousing but this can soon be sorted with a small jubilee clip. there is a internet site called WISH and they sell various lengths, much cheaper than Xhose. I didn't get mine from this site, but it is of the cheaper sort, and would recommend!

Thanks, doesn't really go in to my pedantic detail about hose material and diameter etc :)

Anybody know if a hose purchased from the USA would connect to a standard Irish Tap?

Honestly, you'd think Ireland had no hoses here at all and we all relied on Rain to wash stuff down!
You can buy perfectly adequate hose from Lidl for about 15 euro for 30m.
Keeping it out of the sun is the best way to ensure that it lasts and doesn't suffer from UV damage.
If you really want better quality hose then go to a hose supplier and buy however many metres of rubber hose you think you need.

I bought the expandable hose from HomeStore and More. Have to say I'm not impressed. Its supposed to expand to 3 times its length, mine becomes about a metre longer, even that disappears once you start spraying. Water pressure is good in our place to, jet is great out of it, just doesn't expand. I do find it handy round the back garden as it does reach but I planned on it expanding to reach the front and thats never gonna happen with it. Is very light and handy that way.

Exactly. I bought a 25 or 30m hose in Lidl about 7 years ago. It came with a wind up drum and handle. During the real bad winter of 2010/11 when we had temps as low as -17 here it lay outside the whole time and was solid as a rock with all the frozen water in it but its still going strong to this day.

If you ask me them expandable hose are a pure gimmick! I brought into that game and ended up in the bin. Pick up a hozelock hose one of the best in my opinion. Now what I find is leaving the hose outside over time it will harden and soften and eventually crack best store it in a shed.
