Looking to bring the Family of 2 adults and 2 early teens to a Greek island end of next June for 10 days. Outside a package holiday there seems to be few options to book direct. Ryanair fly Chania,Crete and AL fly to Corfu. Is this all there is? Considering if this is the option where would you recommend? Looking for 10 days accommodation too. Somewhere with a busy evening scene, ie restaurants and some nice bars. Not looking for too much of a transfer either. Any help would be appreciated.

Just be careful you don't land yourself in the middle of Syrian refugees and the desperation they are in. We are all aware of Looky Looky men on sun holidays, but the Syrian refugees is a much larger issue.

I don't mean it in a sense to be harsh to these people, certainly not, but just not the place to take kids at this time or any time over the next year or so.

Falcon fly to Zante, the resort of Kalamaki is only a 5min drive away, cracking little island and a great resort

Was thinking of Zakynthos when I read the title. Although I'm not familiar with Kalamaki, I love Alykes and Alykanas (approx. 30 mins from airport if I remember correctly) Beautiful long sandy beach, lots of restaurants and shops. I don't recall there being any nightclubs, but plenty of bars and all in all it seemed very much a family destination. There's a water park somewhere inland for a day drip and you could rent a jeep to go up into the mountains or right up North to the deep water port of Agios Nikolas. Busses run to Zante town for a days shopping and to see the sights. There's also a little road train that does a run into the hills, showing some of the local countryside, with lunch at a taverna. It really is a beautiful place.

Actually 2 water parks now, the main one about 5 miles inland and the one at Caretta Beach, an AI hotel in Kalamaki, you pay a small fee to enter.

Kalamaki has plenty of nice bars and restaurants, great family atmosphere too

Thomson Airways have charter flights to Crete, Corfu, Kos, Rhodes and Zakynthos.
You can book these destinations as flight only rather than a full package holiday on the Falcon Holidays site.

Aegean Airlines also fly to various Greek islands from Dublin via Athens.

We go to Crete every year. We usually stay in a little resort Nea Chora just a few minutes outside Chania for a few days and then head south to Paleochora or Loutro but there are lots of places along the north west ( like Kalamaki) or north east coast along from Chania. Reythmon is lovely. Public transport is very good. we are going to Athens soon and plan to go to the Peloponnese starting in Nafplio and then heading over to Koroni but you could go down the coast from Athens to resorts like Glyfada on the bus. Or you could get a ferry to Hydra or one of the other islands.

I will have to wait until Ryanair release the Chania dates for next summer. AL fly to Corfu but I'm not as sure about Corfu. Thanks for all the replys.

Like pjproby I travel to Crete once or twice a year and have been all over the island. I usually stay a couple of nights in Chania or Nea Chora on arrival and the same on the way back, Nea Chora is a suburb of Chania and about ten to fifteen minutes walk from the old harbour and has a sandy beach and some good restaurants.

Ryanair flights get into Chania in time for you to check into your hotel and get out for a meal, it's only maybe thirty minutes in the bus or €25 - €30 in a taxi.

The Old Town is buzzing all day and night, but in a family friendly way. There is a very good bus service from Chania and you could visit Rethimno, Balos lagoon or walk the Samaria Gorge on day trips.

If you wanted to see more of the island you could stay a couple of nights in Chania, take a bus to Hora Sfakion then the boat to Paleohora via Loutro and Agia Roumeli and back by bus to Chania.
