Virgin Media Router Upgrade????

Currently have the Ubee EVW3226 and while its fine for the main broadband the wireless output is nothing short of shocking!

I am looking to upgrade the router but choices are limited because of the RF input on the back of the router for the broadband (fibre to the outside of the house, then copper to the room)

Any ideas for a boost as I need it badly with the multiple devices now connecting to the wireless.

Would prefer not to go down the Wifi Extender route if possible...

Are you still in contract with virgin?
If your contract is nearly up you can sign a new one and ask them for the compal router...
I got mine last week.....it's a great piece of kit.
I get 240mbs on wireless I'm the room next door to the router.
    150 in the room below..

Both of those tests were done using the 5ghz radio...

On 2.4ghz I get close to 100mbs in the room below...not bad at all.

That great news, terrible limited this router I am stuck with cannot broadcast 2.4 and % Ghz at same time and no antenna either.

240mbs on WIRELESS, thats mental did not thing you could get that speed unless you using the new ac band.
I am still under contract alright......might ring them and ask them for the new one the contract is up in a month or so.

    That speed was using 802.11ac.
Buy you can run 2.4 and 5ghz together.

Have you considered getting a wifi access point and turning off the wifi on your current VM unit?

If I get a wifi extender (considering the Netgear Nighthawk EX7000) and place it in the sitting room, surely I would need to have the wifi enabled on the VM router for the extender to pick it up.

Or am I missing something Dub...?

    He's suggesting an AP(good idea), you're talking about a repeater(bad idea)

An access piont is cabled to the existing router and placed in a better location.

Ideally a good wifi access point should give you the wifi performance of a good wifi router - just in the case of the wifi access point you leave the routing functions etc with the VM unit.

But to get the AP to a better location means running cat 5 cable to a different room. If I buy the nighthawk extender (and I am tomorrow) I can use that as an AP also, but sticking it beside the VM unit would people only make it marginally better.

But using it as an AP is better then an extender?

The extender halves your max speed. There's a reason why people bother buying homeplugs/running UTP cables.

On the contrary, I just installed the nighthawk and I am getting much faster wifi speeds and much better coverage. Not only that the VM unit is putting out 2.4Ghz and the nighthawk is capable of running both from that freq.

Its not ideal but its alot better, I have it set up in the other room with the sky box and TV plugged straight into the ports with cat 5 cable.

And all other devices connected all over the house @ 5GHz. Its an expensive piece of kit but very impressive.

I might try to set it up as an AP later today see if there is a difference.

    Hi

I got one of the new VM Media hubs 3.0 but having issues with the wifi. I cannot get my nest thermostat to connect to it. Saying cannot connect. Has anyone else had similar issues. Seems to be issue with the security so works once its turns off which is not a solution. VM are not any help, maybe ill need to just bridge it and buy new modem?

What is your security settings for Wifi?

My Nest equipment only connects if I set the 2.4 GHz to "WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK" and not the "WPA2-PSK" that it originally had.
