Motor insurance quotes making me into a conspiracy theorist

I'm aware insurance prices are on the up, but I think my own situation might be that bit more bizarre. The whole thing seems a bit arbitrary anyway. My girlfriend who's younger than me, who's price has dropped to €380. Has a 27 year old driver with an immaculate record, my latest insurance quote (due Sept 5th) is now €1,125!

What might make my case different is that a year & a half ago, somebody drove into my car. When the insurance came up for renewal in (Sept last year), the other driver's insurance company (so I was told) had not yet accepted responsibility for the accident. Then as soon as I'd paid the renewal, a few days later they informed me that the other insurance company were accepting responsibility for the accident. Therefore the price dropped back down to €640 from €1,100ish.

It seemed as if they held off on giving the good news until I had renewed with them. This kept me from looking for quotes off other insurance companies. The important question though; is it that accident that they're still penalising me for? Is having a no claims bonus really the same thing as having never been in an accident? I've I'm getting quotes from other, and if I'm asked "have you ever been in an accident" can I say "no"?

As I don't really need a car at the moment, I'm considering going a few weeks without driving. Are there renewal complications to doing this? Because if there's not, then there's no rush in looking for another quote. The insurance company I'm with won't give me this option, as they'll just back date it to the renewal date. But it shouldn't effect any quote I get from other companies?

    Year 14/15 - €450ish
    Year 15/16 - €640 (would've been €1,100)
    Year 16/17 - €1,125

Nice low quotes OP, Id snap the hand off them if they quoted me 1000e.

I was quoted 4775e. Young people get shafted in this country.

OP, the main issue here is that Ireland is turning into a claim culture where any little tip warrants a hefty pay out.
Whiplash? that'll be 20k please and you are screwed over year after year because of it.
They need to establish a council which limits the amounts which can be paid out.
You'll soon find that the people exaggerating their injuries will be discouraged if they will get sweet f all cash out of it.
Cap the payments and the insurance premiums will start to fall.

That quote was for a 1.6 l citroen. The lad kindly informed me he dropped it from 6000e (i find that hard to believe).

I dont have any previous policy as im new but im never going to get to drive with prices like that.

I only got 8k for a back injury, in which case the offender fled the scene.

Ten years ago when I started driving it was a .8L petrol Matiz. And I was still paying about €1200. Go lower with the engine size and the price will also come down. You can always change the car in a few years when you have a bit more of an NCB.

It costs me more to be insured on my peugout 206, 10 years old than it does to be insured on a 2012 5 series. How is that even possible?

I got quoted last year on a 1.2 l at 3600e. I assume prices would be up since then.

I was thinking just the other day, what benefit is there for young people in this country. Between house prices and car prices and everything else it hardly seems worth staying. Im on a pretty decent salary atm but i really sympathise for young people on lower wages just trying to set their lives up in this country.

So it's old and dangerous. They'll find a way to screw you anyway.

A lot of insurers won't quote cars that old.

I changed my 01 this year to a 2010 because I was looking at quotes of 800-1200 for a 15 year old car. The newer car (same engine size etc) opened up other insurers and cheaper quotes and I ended up paying 550.
