We got one for my dad online - only cost about €35 or something. Was fine but the solicitor did say its had some very strange wording.

A solicitor will charge one or two hundred euro, more or less, to draft a will, depending on the circumstances.

Considering the low cost of getting a will done properly, there is little incentive to get it done otherwise than through a solicitor.

The costs of High Court litigation arising out of a poorly drafted or improperly executed/witnessed will should make anyone shy from will kits, online wills or similar.

I was recently quoted €50 to get a will done with my Solicitor.. unsure if that price included VAT, probably not.

Was charged €80 for original will and I think 50 for some recent changes.

    Does the VAT matter?

I was telling the OP what I was quoted and felt it fair to point out that I wasn't sure if the price included VAT (I think its 21%) or not. Why would it not matter?

VAT is 23%. There is no VAT rate at 21% and hasn't been for about 5 and a half years.

In making a will the issue of VAT would be negligible considering the issues involved.

What do you mean by 'issues'?

    Vat always matters!
I'm guessing that the rate is 13.5%
Does it have to be drawn up by a solicitor or what is required for the will to be valid?

Got wills done last week for myself and the wife. Total cost of €150.

As already mentioned in this thread by hullaballoo, the applicable rate of VAT is 23%.

The formalities for wills are set out in the Succession Act, 1965.

There is no legal obligation to have the will drafted by a solicitor. However, if a solicitor does not oversee matters, the chances of mistakes are high. Such mistakes may be very expensive to fix, afterwards.

For anyone that is interested wills still require some rather pernickety details to be properly adhered to, that's why you're better off with a solicitor. It's not just a case of lashing it down on paper and job's a goodun as some people believe. Oddly enough it's arguably much easier to draw up a contract for tens of millions of euro than it is to have will properly in place for a potted plant, a dog and a few 1970's playboy magazines.

I am sure many solicitors will do it for free or a dry small charge.
They will expect to make some money processing the future grant of probate.
