    Hi

Can anyone recommend a scales that has a minus function (I think its called)?

I searched high and low and couldn't find one that has that function in its description. I want to be able to put a container with powder in it on the scales, take out some powder out of the container and be able to read the difference off a display.

Could you use the tare function on most electronic scales?
ie put the container with powder on the scales, press the tare button to zero it, then scoop out the powder?

I think aldi have some digital ones in stock soon.
There's a button that you press once a container is added that 'zeroes' the weight

This will work. It will show the amount as a negative value, scale shows 0g, scoop out some and it shows -30g.

Maybe the OP is thinking if a scale is zeroed/tared then it would just show zero and not negatives. Like many mechanical scales would not be able to show negatives.

My Tefal scales just show an error (----) when I do this.

that's odd for them to do, seems an obvious thing people would want to do. I have used loads of digital scales over the years and can't recall ever seeing one that gave no negative.

Then Id have to calculate the difference

Of course I could but its not convenient and pointless when I can get a scales that can do it

Yeah, theres plenty of scales that have that feature, but not as convenient

I didn't think they'd show a negative by doing this. Alun (below) had a problem with it

I have a silver crest one that I got in Lidl that does what the OP wants.

I never use it for working backwards but I know when I lift the bowl off it shows -360g or whatever. I'm almost sure the button is 'tare' as suggested above. It's great for resetting the weight to zero, so you can add multiple ingredients to the same bowl.

What are you weighing? I fail to see how calculating could be an issue.

I have this one and if you take the bowl off it shows a minus, so you'd put your stuff in the bowl, reset it to zero and take some out to show the minus. It's not something I've ever used it for but I didn't realise that all digital scales don't work like that.

Every digital scale I've ever had has certainly shown a minus figure. I'd think it's the exception if it doesn't, rather than the norm.

My digital scales, purchased in All Rooms over 15 years ago for less than a tenner shows a negative number.

So, put container of flour on scale, weighs in at 550g. Press tare.
    Scoop out some flour.
Scales now shows -50g, therefore the flour scooped out was 50g.

OP, is that what you want to happen?

    Yeah

So, most digital/electronic scales with a tare function should work. An analogue scale wouldn't work.

But, then again another poster had said that theirs shows just - - - not a negative number. I haven't seen that with any digital or electronic scale.

Unfortunately mine is so well used at this stage, the name has worn away. But it was cheap, from All Rooms on Liffey St in Dublin. Only replaced the battery last year. Great scales!

All my Salter electronic scales I've had have gone negative.

The last three digital scales I have bought, including one for a tenner in Tesco, all did that.

I feel so alone with my dysfunctional scales now :( Were it not for the fact that I can see absolutely no use whatsoever for it showing negative amounts I'd consign it to the great WEEE in the sky and buy another one.

I mostly use it for food tracking for weight loss/portion monitoring purposes. "Two handfuls" of pasta can be anything from 50g to 100g, so when I'm watching my intake, I'll weigh everything carefully. It's easiest to work with negative figures than subtract :).
