Failed medical, what are my options

Hello I am posting on behalf of my friend who had recently applied to the health service executive for the position of paramedic. Unfortunately said person was deemed unsuitable on the very last stage of the clearance stages because said persons eyes were deemed inadequete.

My friend is currently qualified to drive a car, regular ambulance as an emt and also a truck so hearing that said persons eyes were deemed inadequete came as a huge shock to both of us.

We are wondering if there is anything that we can do to rectify this or are there any legal steps we should take? Thank you for any help we greatly appreciate it.

Do you know the specific problem they found? E.g. visual acuity, colourblindness, etc.

Tell them to request a report from whoever failed them detailing why they were failed including reference to whatever standards & guidelines were used to judge the pass/fail.
Ask if there is a retest or appeals procedure and if they would recommend anyone for a second opinion.
When your friend has the guidelines or standards go to a specialist and ask them to write a report on your friends ability to meet the standards.

    Random additional thought.

OP's pal might consider an application to the HSE under the Freedom of Information Acts to discover all the relevant documentation as that might give a clearer picture of what did or didn't happen.

Here is a link to Citizens Information that gives good guidance on FoI matters - http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/government_in_ireland/national_government/standards_and_accountability/freedom_of_information.html

I think you are entitled to see report under FOI, I would advise your friend to see Doc for referral to Ophthalmologist for an assessment though.
