Carpet or laminate, ease of fitting

Master bedroom carpet needs replacing. My problem is I have large heavy furniture and there's literally nowhere to move it to to empty the room. So I've been wondering if laminate is the way to go seeing as that can be done bit by bit?

Also what colour laminate to go for with the furniture being a really really dark Malaysian hardwood, almost black. Walls are grey/blue

    Hi Athtrasna,

A good carpet fitter will be able to work around the furniture, but they won't like it very much! Also, he/she will need at least two people as opposed to one so you will be paying for that extra labour to lift furniture and move it around. It may slow down the job too, so ask if you're being charged by the hour.
How did the furniture get in? Does the bed base come apart? Can the mattress at least move to the landing? They need to be able to move furniture to at least one side of the room while they work on the other.

Carpeting costs are quite competitive these days, shop around.

If going for wood flooring have you considered an engineered wood floor? It is pricier than a laminate but has far better resale value if/when you're selling. It has a veneer of fine hardwood on top so looks and feels like a genuine solid wood floor if you can't go for a solid. I find that no matter how good the laminate/underlay/subfloor is, there's often a bit of 'bounce' in a laminate and it can feel cheap underfoot. It is the first thing you'll feel when you walk into the room.

Anyway if you're going for a laminate or an engineered wood floor, I would suggest going dark, maybe a wenge oak or dark walnut with a deep grain running through it. Go with the widest plank that the space will allow, not a mean skinny one, it always looks better. If going for wood(ish) flooring, I would also suggest putting down a rug on the floor. It will add a bit of comfort under foot, take away the echo in the room and will also help add texture and layers to the room, helping the eye to separate the dark furniture from the dark floor. Otherwise it can all look a bit heavy. Go for a simple, neutral rug that is large enough to go under the bed and under your feet when you hop in/out of bed, a generous size.

    Hope I've helped, good luck.

I got a laminate put down recently. I went in (to a shop I have been dealing with for years) and asked for engineered timber, and he talked me out of it on the basis that laminate is so good now that, even though it is mostly considerably cheaper than timber, it is a much more hardwearing product. It looks great down! I had the same problem with furniture, it was possible to move it round as the job progressed - much more easily than carpet.

One small point I would suggest is that the laminate strips look better if the edges are not cut too much back (you don't get a wide v shape between boards). I have one of each and the snug fit looks much better. I also have a wood floor and it does not look nearly as well as the laminate, the surface is damaged to some extent in a few places.

The only way to judge colour is to get a few samples and try them with the furniture. I found that the colour I thought I wanted was not necessarily the best option.
