query on missing card in outing

We had an outing a couple of weeks ago and one group of players went off early before the start when none of the organisers was about. (allowed). When they were finished no one from the outing was about either as we went off last and were on the course and the first group handed their cards to the course manager who was to hand them in for them.

Course manager didn't give the cards and it has transpired that one of those players had the highest score, but the announced winner was the person who was highest of the cards we had with us. Difference was 3 points 37 v 34 (bad weather day)

What's the best approach to this?

Both the announced winner and the real winner were not present at the meal, so the trophy has not been handed over yet. All players are easy going.

    Thanks

We used a "trophy" as everyone is tired of Crystal / golf stuff etc and prize budget was small. (Trophy was €55) :)

Give it to the guy who had the highest score. Apologise and explain the confusion to the guy in 2nd.

Would it not have been prudent to check you had all the cards before announcing a result? You knew the first group was playing.

It was a dreadful day weather wise and about half the cards were not handed in due to appalling scoring or non completion of the round, also it was an more an end of summer gathering that morphed into a competition.

As above, we'll give it to the winner as it wasn't their error.

Whatever about who gets the prize, you need to consider how you are going to avoid this scenario in the future. I have been in your situation and despite all the buddy buddy / we are all mates just having a game routines ... it does cause issues if not sorted out now.

In our situation we realised it was our decision to call the wrong winner so we talked to the two players and it was agreed that the missing card would be the winner. That was all very well until some months later, when another group decided to play early and returned a winning score .... they had looked at the weather forecast and got out in the best of the day. We decided that the tee times must be adhered to after that and no early or late started can be accommodated. Every situation is different, but what you decide today can have consequences further down the road.

    Best of luck.
