NCT emissions failure - 2000 Yaris

Posting this for a friend of mine whose mechanic reckons that a bottle of Dipetene can work the oracle. All opinions welcome:

    2000 Yaris with 151,000 miles

    Test Results:

    Engine Temp 89°C

Low Idle (580 rpm): CO 2.51% HC 332ppm

High Idle (2,990 rpm): CO 0.67% HC 59ppm

    Lambda: 1.00

HCs are below limits, Lambda is fine but the CO readings are off, especially the low one. Am told that the car is not using oil, but judging by the sound of it prior to the test, I wouldn't be convinced.

No engine lights as far as I'm aware.

Don't think any amount of snake oil can rectify this.

    We talking replacement Catalytic Converter?

Any idea how much it might cost to fix?

If that really is a catalytic converter, then approx 200 notes (part + indy mech's labour).

But, if car was used on short trips, then dipetane + long run on high revs could help indeed. :)

    Thanks j.

Would an Italian tune-up sort out the low idle CO problem though?

It's a fair bit over, the limit is 0.5%

The High Idle limit is 0.3%

    Just wondering:

If the lambda reading is within range (and it appears to be spot-on), would that imply the O2 sensor is not the culprit in this situation?

Or is there something else at fault here? I'd have thought with such poor CO readings that the CAT would be the chief suspect

get yourself a tin of bg44k and put it in a 1/4 or 1/3 of a tank of fuel and do a good motorway drive.. dipetane is good but only lowers the emissions.. bg44k actually gets rid of carbon build up and cleans the system rather than masking the problem...so if it doesnt work then you know it has to be a more serious issue as in possibly pricey...
the bg44k is expensive around 25-30 plus vat..BUT well worth it, pays for itself in the end numerous times over and is a trade item only so you wont see it in a motor factor, but it can be bough in certain garages that use it..
it improves the fuel ecnomy too...
i have used this for years and years and no regrets also the diesel version is called 244 it does the same as the 44k but has a lubricant to lubricate the pump and injectors too. just for any diesel people interested :):)
and no i am not rep or in anyway linked or benefitted by it being sold... just in the trade a long time and know it is as they say "does what it says on the tin" lol :):):)

Probably best to be VERY careful when pouring any of these extra chemicals into your fuel tank - your paint is unlikely to thank you if any is spilled and allowed to sit.

BG44k in its funky ring pull can is especially annoying to get in without spillage! That cataclean bottle is a much smarter design.

true but i imagine the cataclean is even dearer... what i usually do with the 44k is cut the end off and empty 500ml mineral or water bottle and use it as a funnel... but each the their own :) LOL
either way they need a GOOD product to actually clean and not a dipetane type product to just lower the emissions is my main point..:)

Anywhere between €14 to €19 from what I've seen.

I've used this before and can verify how well it works

Cataclean is good alright. Car is being taken for a decent drive today with the full contents of a bottle of it in a quarter-tank full of petrol.

Retest is sometime this week, will update after that.

    Thanks

    Oh, dear.

A spirited drive to the test centre after the prescribed treatment led to even worse results.

I don't have the fail sheet but apparently the "Check Engine" light has been a resident fixture for quite a while, something I wasn't aware of.

Obviously the Cataclean won't have done any harm, but I know it can't resuscitate a moribund CAT.

Friend was quoted €300 for replacement CAT plus installation.

Mine had similar results (yours are a bit worse - low CO is higher) and I fixed the issues by changing the pre-cat O2 sensor. It's a €58 part from MicksGarage for a Denso one. I would try that before changing the cat because spurious cats are pretty bad quality and may only last a few years! I found that a local garage was able to test my emissions on their machine and it only cost me €20 to bring the car down on 3 separate days and have it tested!

Why not just a get a diagnostic check done? Before you spend money on lambda sensors, airflow meters, converters and more snake oil?

I agree, but it's not my call

    Just an update on this:

Car still hasn't passed the test. Replacement CAT required, so an alternative, newer car is being sought instead, rather than sinking a few more bob into the older car.

The old yoke will probably find its way onto donedeal with a universal CAT, somebody might be interested.
