Having owned a 2005 a6 with the blb engine, the bre shares the same oil pump system, yes there are lots of problems with that engine. Oil pump goes and everything with it. If the pump hasn't been changed ever, it will go, along with the chain tensioner and the turbo from running dry. The sprocket that drives the pump also wears away badly. About 1500 to repair

The BRE is not the same as the BLB. Both lumps are 140BHP as standard. The BLB you had (as do I) has the bastard chain driven system whereas the BRE does not. It has the upgraded gear drive system.

Really, the only thing to have any concern about is the HEX key that is an integral part of the oil pump system. Basically a straight allen key (approx 6MM) that's a poor fit by design. I know that with this system however, the preventative fix is far less costly than its predecessor (BLB) and involves replacing this key drive with a better fitting re-manufactured part (non OEM).

The price of the part is little more than the price of a pint but there is surgery involved to swap it out and probably a €300-400 tag but don't quote me on that. George Dalton floats around here and he is an authority on this particular issue. If your car has not had the replacement done, then get it done as failure will not be noticed in terms of audible noise. Basically, the HEX profile in the key-drive rounds off over time which then results in partial drive of the mechanism leading to zero drive over time. If you notice a RED (not orange) oil warning light on the dash, kill the engine immediately. You literally have seconds before fatal turbo damage due to oil starvation, and this will add well north of €500 to your bill for a reconditioned unit supply and fit.

There is no set KM where this will happen as I'm sure driving style, servicing interval (oil) frequency & quality will all have an impact but failures have been reported with little more than timing belt interval mileage. If you (as is likely) up over the 100K, I would definitely prioritise this.

Advice: Get onto GD and book it in. I had the problem happen to me and went down a different road in terms of a fix and thankfully it seems all good 3K on.

Aside from this flaw, they are a great car IMO.
