Job Seekers - Moving abroad

    Hi All,

I have read a lot of the previous threads and I understand that Jobseekers Benefit can be transferred to other EU countries.

My situation is that my employer's business will close on 31st August terminating my employment. I will permanently move to Germany on 1st September. I have my one way flight booked. (In fact due to holiday entitlements and payment in lieu I will not officially finish in employment until later in September)

So my question is, do I need to apply in Ireland for Jobseekers Benefit and then apply for it to be transferred to Germany (although I will not be in the country when I officially become unemployed)
    or
Can I simply apply in Germany later in September for a similar benefit and use proof of my Irish contributions to secure my entitlement.

    Thanks in advance,

    dR

You would need to apply for and be in receipt of Jobseekers Benefit here for a minimum of 4 weeks before you can arrange to transfer it to another EEA country and obtain the necessary forms etc., and it is limited to payment abroad for max of 78 days. It never seems to be that straightforward and run smoothly abroad and people seem to experience delays in payment starting, so need to have enough money to get you by.

    Transfer of Jobseeker's Benefit Abroad
If you have been getting Jobseeker's Benefit in Ireland for at least 4 weeks and wish to go to a country covered by EC Regulations to look for work, you can receive payment of this benefit abroad for up to 78 days. To obtain this you must inform the office where you 'sign-on' at least 4 weeks in advance so that the necessary arrangements may be made before you leave Ireland.

You are also required to register as unemployed, that is, 'sign-on' in the other country within 7 days of the date you were last registered as unemployed with your local Social Welfare Office, that is, within 7 days of the last day for which you receive payment. For more information on transferring your Jobseeker's Benefit contact International Records Section address above.
