Funnily enough, the same conclusion could have been reached by the age-old method of simply looking at a pine forest. Either dawn or dusk. Happens every day.

Ever since I was a child in Somerset we always called the rising spirals of vapour 'Forest Sprites'. They are the souls of fairies who have reached the ends of their short lives. They join together for one last dance before going to the great Sky Fairy.

According to my Great Grandad anyway and he was a great countryman!
