Hitting 40, is it worth getting laser surgery?

    Hi folks,

I'm hitting 40 soon as was going to get the eyes done as a present to myself, just wondering has anyone waited as long, and if so, is it worth doing at all?

I'm short sighted and have astigmatism, I have tried to get contact lenses and it didn't work out as there was a smaller choice of disposable lens with the astigmatism. I was told my cornea diameter was too large after trying about 4 different suppliers.

I suppose the question is "am I wasting my time this late in life? and will I need glasses again in a few years anyway?

    Cheers...

To be honest, it depends on your lifestyle. If it were me, I'm fairly active (commute by bike, play a few sports) so would go for it even in my 40s. You'll need glasses for reading fairly soon as you've mentioned but if you don't want the burden of glasses for general day-to-day life and have the cash to spare then I'd go for it. If you don't really mind having glasses for everything then I wouldn't bother with the surgery.

It's really a personal thing I don't think anyone would be in a position to give you a black/white yes/no answer. If you decide to opt for surgery and need a referral for Optilase then PM me.

Hey OP, has your prescription changed in past few years? I got it done aged 21, but I would argue that 40 years is definitely young enough! If your eyes have settled and they're not changing prescription much, I would recommend it.

I wore glasses since I was 7 and had it done in my mid 40's , It's best think I ever done, particpating in sport while not having to wear glasses alone make it worthwhile. I do use reading glasses though.

Got Lasik done last January 2015 at the age of 40! Delighted with my new 20/20 eagle eyes!! They were both -3 before!

Has given me more freedom and peace of mind and in a few years I'll be saving money! Just make sure consultation is very thorough and be honest about everything to optician. Had mine done at Optilase and have a referral if you or anyone else needs it! PM me! :)

I suggest to go to a clinic and see what they offer.
they can improve your eyesight but you may need reading glasses. There are two guys of similar age at my workplace and what they have done is offset the strength of both of their eyes. So one is for focus on close stuff (-1 or -2) one for further away (20-20 vision). So they don't need glasses.
There's always options but optometrists will give you all of them to see what's best for you.

Same as said above, i got one eye done 15 years ago, i was lucky in that my weaker eye was my dominant eye so i am glasses free since, at the time they explained that if my dominant eye was the better eye they would have to operate on both and i would need reading glasses sooner. It is not for everyone so get the check up and listen carefully as it is in their interest that you get the surgery.
