My Facebook and Instagram accounts are not linked. And I don't follow any of my Facebook friends on Instagram. And yet all of sudden loads of my Facebook friends are appearing in my Instagram discover people tab.

I'm guessing since I used the same email for both accounts that Facebook put two and two together., right? Does that mean I'm appearing in their suggested user list as well? I've changed my Facebook email but my Facebook friends are still appearing in Instagram.

Anyone else have this problem? It's not like my Instagram account is a secret, but I don't really use my Facebook account for a reason and would rather both accounts weren't linked in any way.

The usual way these things get linked is by installing the apps on a phone and them having access to your contacts. Or your friends doing the same.

Or Google likes to grab all info and link it. Failing that the apps and Google can see your activity and make connections that way, by cross matching it with your friends activity.

It's almost impossible to keep them separate on an android device. I've mostly managed to do it on a windows phone. But on Android everything is trying to grab your data and share it. Not sure about apple.

Not installing the apps and just using the website is a bit better. and not allowing the website access to your contacts. This only works with some apps. Can't do that with WhatsApp and similar.

I'm on iOS and very careful about what access I give apps. The only third party app that has access to my contacts is Whatsapp, so that could be it as well. Though many of my Facebook friends appearing in Instagram aren't in my contacts, so I'm thinking it's more likely to be Facebook. It's annoying that the two accounts have become linked despite me never linking them.

I think might dump Instagram. I barely use it since algorithmic feeds were introduced anyway.

I'm not a Instagram, except to monitor other family accounts. I generally just use the websites, disable notifications, and don't stay logged in. For me any useful content on social media sites, like these, is largely drowned out by social spam. Sites that should be useful, like say Irish Rail is largely pointless, as they almost never give timely updates of problems, its just full of minor complaints.

The data sharing is almost impossible to avoid, unless you are not on any of the sites at all, and have no contacts. I've not retreated that far from technology yet though.
