Help for novice needed - lacquer

Some of the wooden surround by the oven on the kitchen was stained and I was advised to scrape the lacquer off and reapply to fix it.
Was kindly given a lacquer solution by a friend of a friend but due to work and family commitments I left it for a over a week and now the solution has gone from liquid to a wax like form in the bottle I got.
Is there any way to salvage the lacquer solution or do I need to start again.
    All help appreciated.
    Kirk

For small jobs like that you can get spray cans of clear cellulose lacquer, most paint / hardware shops have them .
