    Hi all,
as some of you may be aware of, creamery I supply to (Glanbia) have informed farmers that they're recently developed a way of testing bulk tank milk for Salmonella antibodies.

As a result, I've received a letter saying that my milk tested positive as a result of this new test for Salmonella antibodies and they advise vaccination.

Just wondering if others are in the same boat as myself and whether they'll vaccinate on the basis of this new test and if so, should if be left closer to the end of the year for Spring calving herds?

    Kind Regards,
    Agrian Brian.

I'd say your vet is the first port of call. If salmonella is there its from now on abortions would occur. Find out how accurate the test is I guess maybe ask vet if bloods would help confirm. Most vets would likely advise vaccination anyway as aside from economic losses an outbreak would be a health risk to those on farm esp kids or older folk

I was in the same boat this time last year. There is a glanbia vet , cant remember his name but he explained everything very thoroughly(sp) to me. The test is cultured for a few weeks so for anything to show up means that there is a problem. I vaccinated last back end and again I think 6 weeks later. Then its an annual injection. I thought better to be save than sorry, wouldnt like to be facing into an outbreak in the middle of the year. Its not cheap but peace of mind is important

Had an outbreak of salmonella last Jan, 4 good early feb due cows aborted, one was very sick but thankfully came right, they all ended up sold as culls though, right pain in the hole.

Do you do the glanbia herd health test? If so did it show positive for salmonella?

Any sort of a ballpark figure on vaccine prices mj? We also had two tests with salmonella antibodies. With the horror stories on here I don't want to chance it. Very expensive first day though.

Aroud €5/cow, they need two shots a few weeks apart for the initial vaccination and one a year after. €10/cow is fairly cheap compared to an outbreak.

I got a "screen price" of €6.50/dose. I don't doubt you on the cost of an outbreak but it's an extra bill. We went back on the Rota vaccine a couple of years ago and it didn't save us much money if any but absolutely no comparison in calf performance and calf rearing hassle since we reintroduced it. That's not cheap either but treating sick animals is murder on time.

AFAIK and said at the grassland conference last January too, 14 days minimum between vaccines unless otherwise stated. Some companies would have Lepto and salmonella vaccines that may be compatible to use together though.

Thanks for the replies to this thread so far lads. I'll chat to my vet about vaccinating.

Do most spring calvers wait till later in the autumn to vaccinate?

Would vaccinating the cows leave their calves more resilient to Salmonella once born???

    Cheers.
