Two providers on a line

    Hi

I'm in the process of switching from Voda to eir for fixed line BB.

My Voda connection is still up and running. I contacted Eir to ask when I'll go live on their service, and they tell me I already have?
When I plug in the eir modem, it all looks good. When I log into the modem, it's says it's connected, has a WAN IP address etc..but I've no internet connection when using it.

Can both providers be live on my line at the same time?? I always though that couldn't be the case..

    Two providers on a line

    That title hurts my head.

You might have to do a release/renew and perhaps a dns flush on your pc.

Open a cmd box and type:

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

    ipconfig /flushdns

DHCP should sort all that out but sometimes the NIC/OS needs a quick hurry up. Voda might be using a different range from Eir which MIGHT explain why you can't get Internet access from the Eir router.

You should also be able to ping/treaeroute from within the modems. Once you can login to each device you should try ping from the modems themselves rather than from the pc. Just for giggles and see what the craic is.

The above should indicate that I actually haven't a clue. However, in theory threre isn't anything that springs to mind other than a software config that would prevent such an overlap.

Based on my past experience, the previous provider's router will generally continue to work for a week after switching service provider with DSL connections.

The DSL Internet connection goes by the PPPoE login details, so if the previous provider's router or PPPoE login details are used, it will continue to connect through their network, i.e. Vodafone IP address for the Vodafone PPPoE login.

When I switched from Vodafone to Digiweb earlier this year, I had a rather interesting scenario where Digiweb supplied me with a Fritz Box completely blank of any configuration and as they moved my landline # to VoIP, I couldn't use the landline to call them. I don't have any no mobile signal inside either.

So I connected the Vodafone router, called them via VoIP and they talked me through the settings to put into their router to get me online. I checked my IP address between swapping the boxes and indeed the Vodafone continued to give me a Vodafone IP address, while the Fritz Box gave me a Digiweb IP address.

As far as I'm aware of with VDSL (FFTC), the switch takes place in the cabinet as the IP address is delivered by IPoE using DHCP without login details.

Its complicated, but the simple answer is with old ADSL lines you can often have a scenario where PPPoE calls to two providers will work on the same line. In fact if you have test credentials for each you could pay Pure for a line and connect with Eir, Vodafone, Sky, Magnet IPs.

With VDSL its not really possible. The port should always be either disabled(sync, no auth at all) or assigned to a provider. So your traffic is pushed into the assigned ISPs MPLS, you may get an IP based on their config but their ACLs wont let you out if your credentials aren't accepted.

    Leave the vodafone one in.
When the port config is actually updated it'll get a red/off internet light
Connect eir one, wait 3 mins, online. There should be no in between phase where neither work.

I've no problem waiting for the switch over. My issue is Eir have told me it should be already switched.

Have them query the line in OpenEirs gateway, it'll tell them the state of the transfer order or if it was rejected.
