Headless Audio player

So I was off work sick for a week and started looking at my Raspberry Pi and wondering what use I could put it to.

I'm a bit of a HiFi nut and have a huge collection of music sitting on a NAS. Some research lead me to RuneAudio. It's headless audio player that allows control from any web browser on any device and uses the Pi which makes it very neat and easily hidden.

The downside is that the sound quality isn't great, what can I expect from a 30 quid computer ! There are ad-on audio cards but most are for the plus versions of the Pi.

Anyway I have a Gigabyte Brix micro PC which allows a bit more scope for quality add on audio Devices and DACs. So I'd like to use it rather than the Pi but need the same headless web based control that RuneAudio offers.

So does anyone have any suggestions on a Linux Distro based system that can do what I need ? Please !

    Ken

I used Squeezeplug on a Pi a few years ago ..... passed it on to a relative so did not pursue it any further. It continues to work.

You might find something suitable by searching for JEOS (Just Enough Operating System). I use Openelec for all my media needs and will most likely in time move to LibreELEC a recent fork of Openelec. There are lots of plugins available for different functions if not in the basic OS. It uses Kodi when used with a display, but is happy as a backend server.

Thanks Johnboy. I downloaded LibreElec with Kodi which seems nice.

It needs an App though which is fine for my own device but I wanted a facility where anyone could access the library via a web browser (like with RuneAudio) rather than having to download an App. Maybe there's an add-on for this ?

    Like you I run a rpi1 model B as a headless player.

I added a hifiberry dac to improve sound quality and you can still pick them up for the rpi1. I use volumio as the os and it works great.

Have it connected to an amp and control it either from the pc or phone.

Run the os from an sd card and have added a wifi dongle to the rpi.
