HRV - Ducting only?

Looking at HRV but not sure if we can afford it during the build and one company suggested I get all the ducting installed at approx 1/2 the cost of complete HRV. As anyone done this?

Or is it possible to install the ducting myself (It sounds fairly straight forward but probably not advisable to get the best out of system?!)

If you don't install the HRV unit now and only install the ducting, then how will you plan on ventilating the house.

You could do the duct work yourself but depends on your hands on skills. It might be better to let HRV company or installers do it.

Is this a new build house?.

MVHR I would not consider optional in a new build. With the modern sealed envelope type build it is essential. Otherwise you'll have a sick building.

Don't want to sound smart but opening windows as worked for years!
I'm fairly good with doing stuff myself. Anyone on here installed it themselves?

Whats prices have people been getting for HRV? Its a 2400sq ft house

It was OK years ago as houses were naturally drafty anyway. If you have an airtight house it wont be enough for you to open a few windows.

Unless you are happy with mould developing! :)

Re installation, there are some useful threads on http://www.ebuild.co.uk/forum/228-mvhr-mechanical-ventilation-with-heat-recovery/

eBuild is now archived, but many of the contributors are now active on its replacement, see http://forum.buildhub.org.uk/ipb/forum/79-mechanical-ventilation-with-heat-recovery-mvhr/

I have 2500sq foot house and cost approx. 5000euro for HRV unit and ducting installed and commissioned.

Patjoe, yes the smart answer would be to open the windows but how long will that last during rain and windy weather, and just wait until the winter comes. It is ok during summer months.

I would love to see trying to heat the house during winter with the windows open, the heating bills would be quite expensive.

Can you not get the HRV unit installed now during the build, work the budget somehow to suit?

Delfagio I've gotten 2 prices similar to that. Waiting on company doing A2W to price it including HRV.

I am trying to squeeze it in but was wondering had anyone fitted it themselves to save costs or perhaps added the ducting during build and completed it at a later date.

Its a new build so easy to install pipe work now

    Hi PatJoe,

I have well insulated the house and i've been forced to install MHRV !!
Day time, maybe was ok but night time and specually in the morning,we werent able to sleep, breath and it was very nasty experience ! Windows were half bottom full with condensation ...
After install, we felt better, house / home is much healthier as well.

DIY ,as per my post here ! Quite challenging, i'm not sure if i will do it again OR i may do it DIY but different, based on the learned lesson !
