I was wondering without hacking at my timber surround... I was thinking of putting a small stove jutting out from the opening of my fireplace.. I wonder if I pulled off the timber surround ..would it be possible to get a iron/ metal surround to replace it ..so that it would conform to the fire regs..and look reasonably ok? I like the timber surround as is ..it goes with the room ..I know I can't put a stove in as it's against regs. Did any DIY guy try this ..did it turn out successful? I edit ..to add another pic! Would it be major job to switch original to this one?

Have gas ok. Had gas fire before ..don't like them .. I wonder could I get some sort of hard wood shelf ..to keep heat from tv ... . Perhaps I could move tv ..I like it where it is ..

I personally think the cast iron surrounds are horrible looking yokes. I had my stove installed a couple of years ago. There is a large wooden shelf about 3 feet above the stove and there's not a bother on it. It comes out about 10" from the wall and the chimney wall is tiled. I'm too lazy to add a photo right now :p

Anyway, there is a mirror above the shelf. The wooden back frame was warping from the heat and putting stress on the mirror before the shelf went up. No problems now, but I wouldn't feel comfortable putting a TV in its place. It might not be getting cooked, but it wouldn't be getting any cool air ventilation with the fire below it.

Very good I think your right probably. I did get a stove guy to look at it as is before ..he wouldn't touch it..distance from combustibles..regs...and invalid house insurance ..with timber nearby ..should a fire happen ...that's what put me on the cast iron surround ..road ..so to speak ..thks

what about a glass fronted gas fire c 77% efficient when on and 100% when off as no draught up chimney :D

Granite / Marble / Some other stone surround?

    Or Tile?

That sounds ideal. Glass fronted ....77 efficient ..I really would only use it occasionally ..sounds ideal..would you have link to that one? Would I still have to dump my nice wooden surround I wonder../lastly ! Can you use bottled gas..that efficient ..would be ideal
