Will not or will insure?

So all this insurance business is definitely gone pearshaped in my opinion.
Wanted to insure my car and got told it can't be insured as its over 10 years old. In desperation I answered an ad from a bank plugging motor insurance. They came back with a quote nearly the same as I paid last year( Note I have been using the same company for the last (lots) of years, + full no claims)
Get this when the policy docs came back it was only underwritten by the same company that had turned me down:eek: :D

When you say 'wanted to insure my car', do you mean you looked for quotes from other companies because your renewal was too high - or are you saying that your existing insurer refused to renew the policy?

Asking because you mention 'in desperation'..... which makes it sound like you were even being turned down by your existing insurer.

You just have to go through every insurer that sells in Ireland to get quotes before you can decide who to go with. Do up a spread sheet and compare price and cover. It's time consuming, but it pays off in the end.

Yes I was being refused by my existing insurer. (But they turned out to be the very ones that underwrote + supplied the insurance that the bank sent.).As for the spreadsheet idea while I like it, its a bit beyond me :o. I'd nearly have more luck doing that the old fashioned way, pen and paper. Ooops and ruler :)

Why did they refuse to offer renewal?

Most insurers ask the question "have you ever been refused insurance or renewal"

Be mindful to answer all questions truthfully as it could come back to haunt you.

this all came about on renewal. they had no problem insuring it for the previous 7 years. They claimed it could not be insured by them because of its age.
All details have always been true, and no claims made.

You have the car since it was three years old, they insured it for seven years running and they suddenly refused a renewal?

Is it a high performance car? Is there anything else you're not telling us - penalty points, conviction for something or other?

    Something doesn't add up.

The decision to not invite renewal is not taken lightly by an insurer because they are leaving themselves open to fines if they cannot provide valid reasons for not inviting.

Over the last few weeks I've only issued 3 non invites out of over 300 renewals.

1 because the claims experience was shocking (though we will likely end up having to quote if the policy holder wants insurance)

1 because the car was scrapped nearly 12 months ago so there is no vehicle to actually insure.

1 because the insured has not returned requested documents (if they do we will likely issue renewal).

Other than that every policy is being invited.

The car is actually 22 years old . A beauty. Like I said they had no problem insuring it before, even though it was still over 10 years old.
No modifications, no penalty points ,no medical upsets. The only change was another year clocked upon on drivers and car. Yet they insured it when we went through the bank:rolleyes:

Very important thing - have you revealed to the bank that you have been refused renewal? That might really come back haunting you...

If you're telling the truth, I would file a complaint against that company.

What do you call "shocking claims experience"? No names nor nothing - just an area of liability if you're allowed of course...

1 claim a year for the last 4 years, all involving crashing into third parties, all with personal injury claims, 3 of the 4 claims outstanding with substantial combined reserves.

Basically an absolute liability on the road.

Any explanation why an insurance company would not quote: I have a policy with them and was looking for a quote for my husbands car, as it would be cheaper for a multi car policy. We have never been refused a quote before, both nearly 50 yrs old, full no claims bonus, no accidents, no points. The car in question is a mazda 3, no modifications, nothing. We have had the car for 3 yrs and this has never come up before. The person I was speaking to couldnt say exactly why the quote was refused, he said the car did not match the companies criteria! Any ideas?

No previous experience as a main driver.

We both have been main drivers on our own cars, with being named drivers on the other policy for years.

    What age is the car.
    Which insurer.

Cars over 8 years old are only driven by scumbags according to FED.

Insurers are obliged to offer you a renewal quote, but are not obliged to offer a quote for nw business. The age of the car appears to be the issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭biddy21

Just checked their website and it says that the car needs to be less than 14 yrs old

This age of car thing has snuck in under the radar and causing havoc. I can't believe the Minister for Transport isn't getting absolute battered on this. And it was that numpty Paschal Donohoe was sitting in office when this started.

Last renewal I had only two insurers offer a quote on my car due to it being over 10 years old. And the two insurers had attached a levy onto the quotes constituting the age of the car. My car being voer 10 years old is now costing me €300 extra on my premium.

It's a total sham and makes me question why the NCt is even a legal requirement anymore, if Insurers can just refuse to offer policies on cars this age, based on their own internal data that they havn't been scrutinised on.
