Getting married early next year and I'm wondering what happens if one of us decides to quit the job and stay home with the kids. Can joint assessment begin immediately or does it have to be done at the end of the year?

It's a little complicated, but in simple terms you are treated as single people for the year. Then, at the end of the year, you can ask for a review, and Revenue will compare the tax you did pay as single people with the liability you would have had if you were jointly assessed for the year. That notional refund will be time-apportioned from the time you got married. So if you were married for 3 months of the year you would get one quarter of the notional refund.
