M$FT to start monthly rollup updates for Win7/8.1 in October.

According to this, from October each month's patch "package" will contain the previous month's patches. So November's will have October's, December will have November's and October's, etc. They will also start including previous patches (from before October) as time goes by.

What this will mean is that the patch package will grow larger and larger as time goes by, so for those on a limited broadband package, it might eventually make patch Tuesday a bad thing.

However there was this statement, which I don't quite get:
Devices that have this rollup installed from Windows Update or WSUS will utilize express packages, keeping the monthly download size small.
I get my updates from Windows Update. If I patch religiously (which I do) does this mean that, say, in December I will only be pulling down those patches that were released for December? Isn't that what's already going on?

Or is an "express package" something else?

Express packages are basically a kind of binary delta. So while MS will release a full rollup package of say 500MB, your machine will compare the available package against what's on your machine and will only download the 10MB part of the package that's relevant to it.

This differs from the current model in that you cannot cherry-pick the updates that you receive. It all or nothing.

Thank you, that's cleared up nicely. So it shouldn't be all doom and gloom for users with data limits in the future.

Yeah. The "Express" thing was actually built to accomodate large corporate networks who didn't want to flood their internal network with traffic between clients and the WSUS server.

So MS are just applying the same situation between the end user and the Microsoft Update service.

Most likely to reduce the burden on their own servers rather than save your badnwidth :)

W 8.1. After appling the large update yesterday, (20th_Oct) In task manager I see disc activity at 100% for several minutes before it settles after reboot. Anyone else seeing this?

The naming system is great, isn't it!

Security Monthly Quality Rollup (sign) is everything including telemetry patches and possible attempt to get you to Windows 10. At some point on my machine, I had telemetry absolutely killing my machine for 20 minutes with disk activity so perhaps that's happening to you.

The security rollup only can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog which was finally updated to work with any browser
(http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com - try searching for "October x64" to see patches)

Genuine question, how do you know that the disk activity was telemetry related?
