GoSafe Van but no camera sign

OK so here is the story...

Got tagged by a gosafe van last week in Cork on the R615 (Poulacurry South in Cork) on the way from Glanmire up to Mayfield

Was doing 59Kmh in a 50Kmh zone, fair enough

    My question is the following....

I did not see ANY camera sign from the start of the R615 from Mayfield into Glanmire. So was not aware that it is a GoSafe/ Camera check area.

I have looked and looked and can't see any camera sign

There is a camera sigh at the other end of the stretch of road as this ends out near Grandons Toyota garage.

I think this is a recently added stretch of road and maybe they forgot to move or install the sign

IS this any grounds for appealing??

How do you know if was a GoSafe van, did you see it?

The gardai GATSO vans can be totally unmarked and they can put them where they like. They let off bright flash at night but if it was during the day you wouldn't notice until you get the FCPN in the post.

Yes I was a GoSafe van as I saw it as I drove past, the markings on the side

It may have been a survey van. They don't "catch" you as such, they don't send out points afaik.

Either use the map here: http://www.garda.ie/GoSafe.htm
    or KMZ file
or co-ordinates on the .pdf to see if the location matches the location of the van.

So you would only drive within the speed limit if it was a camera check area

    All pretty much unmarked.
Apart from a relatively small "Survey Van" Sticker.

The Assistant Garda Commisioner told us something slightly different back in 2010:

    http://www.towns-ireland.com/warning-signs-for-speed-cameras/

edit; while there was no mention of the legal aspect he did say there would be signs.....however the signs are the responsibilty of the local council while the locations are chosen by AGS. I'm confident that all updates are passed on and acted upon immediately. Well, pretty confident......

I could be wrong, but I think, there might be something in law about signage for speed cameras, but that it might only refer to fixed camera's.

I vaguely remember something about it from years ago when the grey fixed gatsos were introduced.

But as I said, I could be wrong.

But I definitely do believe that there is no legal requirement for signage regarding mobile cameras.

There are two go safe vans on the go in my local area with neither road having speed camera signs on them

Was going up a very steep hill at the time

and have you never ever gone over the speed limit even for just a few seconds?

No, of course he wouldn't, he is after all a perfect human being, the internet is full of such creatures don't you know.

Back to the topic AFAIK there is no loophole to get out of a fine because of no sign being present but if you really want to know the only way is to take your chances going to court. There are a few solicitors who specialise in this area but you would be paying them far more than the fine to take your case on.

In future be more observant, the vans only detect a short distance from the camera so even if you are going significantly above the limit you should have enough time to react unless the van is stuck right into a hedgerow.

Thanks for the feedback, I must have misunderstood the usage of GoSafe vans - it seems they can go anywhere on the roads same as the Gardai and the Gatso vans

Yep memo to brain to is be more observant and learn from lesson

As per correspondence with the Garda Press Office.

There is no legal impediment to GoSafe vans operating outside of speed enforcement zones and no legal requirement for prior warning via road signage for Gardaí or GoSafe speed enforcement checks.

Speed enforcement warning signs are a matter for local councils to erect and they are erected for the purpose of acting as a deterrent rather than for legal requirements.

Speed enforcement zones are the primary area for focusing speed enforcement efforts by GoSafe as dictated by the Garda National Traffic Bureau and Garda Policy.
