VRT booking after 28 days

    Hi All,

Does anyone know if it's common to be fined after going over the grace period of 28 days when importing a car that needs to be VRT'd?

I have no choice but to book for a date that is only a couple of days over but supposedly revenue can fine me.

Is it normal and how strict are they on enforcing this?

    Thanks for any help.

Yes if you "declare" it's over 28 days you will be fined.

Thanks Atlantic, do you know if the VRT/NCT center enforce this or how would revenue even know whether it has passed the 28 days?

You have to bring proof of when you imported it, ferry tickets etc. If brought in from NI then hard to prove/disprove against invoice date.

it would be a tiny amount anyway (if you don't follow Marcasm's strong hint)

You have read a hint where there was intended to be one. If he's bought in GB that's it, would find it hard to argue re dates without proof. If bought in NI then while there's no proof, hard to show it wAsn't brought back same day. Irrespective, as you say not a major fine in any event if it's such a short time, it's a fraction of the VRT per day.
When I did my two in May I had to reschedule from. 2 perfect Dublin appointments to Arklow and Enniscorthy. Not sure what the OP's reason for delay (mine was DSP incompetence over a PS card) but maybe he can get an earlier inspection in another centre to save the additional charge.

It will actually only be a single day over so 29 days. The reason I posted this question was because the girl at the VRT center said that I could be fined by revenue. It sounded like they don't handle these issues at all so I was wondering how revenue might find out at all.

Car was brought in from mainland UK so no chance of getting away with it if they do happen to investigate it.

The delay is because they don't accept such things as Car reg document from another car (For address purposes, ridiculous considering it's from them). Unfortunately I had nothing else as it's a fairly new address and all the bills are in my girlfriends name :/

    No.

VRT is calculated from the day it enters the state. You are given 28 day grace to pay the vrt based on that date, but if you pay it on day 29+, you are fined the VRT€ * 0.1% * 29+days.

So if your vrt is €2k and your 40 days in the state (cough, according to the bare handwritten barely legible receipt from NI), your vrt fine is €80

    Isn't it a 30 day deadline not 28?

I'm fairly sure you can buy privately in the UK.
And it's also possible to edit emails.

I take it if you buy a UK reg car privately from somebody who imported it but didn't register it - you will be liable for a fine based in the number of days since the seller brought it into the country?

depends if they know when it was brought in. You don't know, you just have a receipt with todays date on it.
