    Hi

Just had our perc test done and the report recommends a "packaged wastewater treatment plant and polishing filter". I know what a polishing filter does but the "packaged wastewater treatment plant" sounds a bit open ended. I've searched this forum and google and while I can find plenty of suppliers, I cant find anything me what the difference is between a septic tank and this plant. Can anyone advise what extra bits are in this plant? I can't get hold of the engineer as he is gone holidays!

has he just signed me up to something expensive?

More advanced and more expensive system. Percolation results indicate that a standard septic tank wouldn't be up to scratch to pass EPA Guidelines re same. Google EPA wastewater guidelines for single houses.

He hasn't "signed you up to something more expensive"....he has specified the system best suited to the safe disposal of effluent due to the poor conditions of your site.

The packaged waste water system is basically any of the nsai certified systems that angry bird mentions above.

By not naming a specific manufacturer he has allowed you to shop around and get the cheapest.

It will be more expensive than a septic tank but will give better treatment too.*

*Provided you buy a good, certified one. Excuse the pun but there's a lot of sh*t ones out there!

Just a word of caution, the cheapest to buy may not be the cheapest to maintain, service or run.

I've seen guys propose bord na mona puraflo as a matter of course. That is what I would call signing you up to something expensive.
The package plant is different to a septic tank in that it is designed to encourage / speed up the digestion of the sewage. The plant will require a power supply and most will have an air pump boosting air supply into the effluent. In addition, your typical system will also feature plastic media , the purpose of which is to give much increased surface area for the organisms to grow on - again to speed up the biological process.

I'll go a step further - the cheapest to buy will probably be of the same quality as what is flowing into it!

    * I should have said - shop around to get the most effective! Cheapest in most things is usually a false economy.
