New power plugs on Dublin-Cork carriages

    I spotted some new sockets installed on the MK4.
    They're at almost at window height and not exactly the prettiest retrofit I've seen! Surface mounted painted metal boxes.

    I don't know how it's so complicated. The BS type sockets we use here are enormous though. The continental CEE type outlets seem to be much easier to integrate into things as they're a round fitting.

    The British ones always seem to be big awkward fittings in comparison.

    I would assume they've plenty of power. The generator car has two huge power plants in it and laptops barely use 1amp. Mobile chargers draw milliamps

    Bare in mind they're rated in amps at 5 or 12/24V not at 230V

    Their mains draw is well under 100W for a laptop and probably 4-10W for absolute max mobile charger.

    You'd probably barely need 13amps for an entire coach. You could simply set trips on the circuits at 16A per circuit or whatever.

    You're not planning a system to power a tumble dryer or 3kW electric kettle at every seat, even though the socket spec is for up to 13A.

    Even in domestic wiring they're usually sitting on 20Amp radials. So throwing three large 3000W appliances on would likely trip the circuit even if it had 20 sockets.

    I know on most French trains the laptop sockets are limited to around 1amp (at 230V that's 230W more than enough to supply laptops.

    If you plug in say a hair straightener, the sockets will switch off.

    The actual physical sockets are standard French earthed 230V 16 Amp but, they're not intended to be used for anything other than portable IT equipment.

    Glad to see they're finally rolling out though. It's the one huge downside the MK4 had.

    yes there are indeed. just under the tables next to the windows. discovered this face on the Dublin to Cork and galway trains recently. Extremely handy for recharging phones I must say.:)

    They're on both the Mark IVs and 22000-Class railcars from what I've seen so far.

    Sorry for dragging up an old thread. Wondering if anyone has had the issues I've had today with sockets on the Cork train.

    I tried several non-working ones in Coach E on the 8am this morning before moving carriage where I found a working one. Am now on the 4.20 22000 train back to Dublin and both sockets by my seat aren't working. Is this a common occurrence?

    *bonus complaint* My pre-booked seat doesn't exist on the 4.20, a bike rack is where the seat should be.

    They are generally good on the ICR's, sounds like the switch tripped in the drivers cab. If anything the sockets on the Mark IV regularly don't work whatever the problem is with the DVT powering where they must be regularly re set.

    I assume you did try press the green/red button between the plugs before you moved coach?

    I have had some issues with the Mk4 retrofitted sockets, but not in recent times. When they were relatively new the sockets in the last carriage (E/F/G) tended to not work. On all bar one occasion they worked in another carriage.

    Rarely would I have an issue with the 22k sockets, just make sure to press the green button if it isn't working. If nothing works report the carriage number to IR.
