I think it's better when we under achieve in the Olympics and elsewhere,we're not genetically capable of handling success and
we lose the run of ourselves if thing get too good.If the Celtic Tiger taught us anything it's to be happy with the three bed semi and forget about that apartment in Seville.

So, if Ireland win a medal or two we all have to buy decking? Am I getting this?

Appears to be the correct conclusion.

Someone in work once said to me, "The higher the climb, the bigger the fall", referring to someone who had just been promoted. I thought it was a joke. Some mentality.

    "We"?

Do "We" spend every waking moment thinking, believing, preparing and pushing ourselves towards excellence?

Do "We" risk careers, put relationships on hold, isolate ourselves socially, make hundreds of sacrifices in single minded pursuit of an event that happens once every four years?

Do "We" have the faintest idea what "We" are talking about?

    I don't :)

On a per capita basis we have more medals than the US.

    That's completely the wrong attitude.

Yeah, we should be winning them all, just like NORTH KOREA do every Olympics.

    Kids,

You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is never try.

My arse has barely shifted from the couch over the last week, so I answer an emphatic yes to the bolded paragraph.

No to all the rest though :pac:

That reads like an ad for the Olympic,s,
I had images of all sorts of athletes running and jumping and swimming, with dramatic music in the background and those words said in a dramatic voiceover.
    Do you work in media?ðŸ˜

I think we're slowly shaking off that plucky loser mentality in sports. I've really liked what I've heard out of all our athletes this past week, they're all determined to get better and achieve the best. They won't settle for mediocrity anymore.

Even the rowers said they want to win next time around. As they said themselves nobody dreams of winning a silver medal.

Did you know that supporting non-winners is good for social solidarity. Kindof the feminine psychology of 'support the group' approach. Britain is much more 'winner takes it all', possibly to the detriment of social solidarity? (Look at Brexit)... + they've currently the 2nd largest amount of olympic medals.
