Hi all, can anyone tell me which companies are refusing van insurance on older vehicles? So far have refusals from fbd and allianz - i need one more refusal so i can force a quote under declined cases agreement. Thanks for the help

There is a general thread here but it's for private cars. You can try the mentioned companies.

Also check all the places in the sticky "List of insurers".

Why? Are you expecting it to be an affordable quote?

do you not just want a real quote?

I have a quote from my usual brokers 130e dearer than last year... They told me of the 14 comps they tried 10 refused due to age. I find this totally unacceptable since there's absolutely no evidence to suggest older cars are a greater risk. Think about it... If everyone was to go thru the process and force a quote they would have to rethink their policies, but most people have better things to do than sitting on the phone all day, and they know this. So its the principle of thing really! I will try insuremyvan also but i suspect brokers quote is the cheapest i'll get

According to financial services ombudsman its supposed to be a 'fair' quote. Be interested to see what they call fair!

insuremyvan are just a broker too. mine's up in february.. last year it went from 4something to 7something though.. talked down to 6something i think. dreading what's going to come up next time.. it is out of control.

i have a 1995 car that's up soon too. that one i'm really dreading. car only has 82k miles on it though, so yeah i'm sure it has a lot less wear and tear than it's 21 years age would suggest.

Have 84 land rover as well as the van... Thankfully thats vintage now so cheap enough but still have to have another main policy hence the van which is supposed to be a cheap runaround... Not now with the insurance though! Hard to know what game the insurance co,s are playing - seems they have a vested interest in new car sales!

does a commercial vehicle policy work as a primary policy as far as vintage insurers are concerned? i had thought it didn't.. that opens stuff up a bit if so.. but i feel it's not the case.

You have received a quote so the ombudsman will not get involved.

The only time they are concerned in relation to premium is if someone is literally been charged thousands.

The declined cases committee exist for people that cannot get quotes from anyone, not to waste time on people that just want cheaper insurance.

I dont just want cheaper insurance, i want not to be penalized for driving an older van. If the ombudsman wont do anything i'll have to write to my td. Its time people made a stand instead of putting up with lawless corporate bandits.

If your premium was the same as last years, would you be concerned about getting quotes elsewhere?

    No.

Ergo, you are looking for cheaper insurance.

I'm driving the same vehicle, havent made any claims, getting older (i.e. more experienced)... once upon a time this should have meant my insurance would fall year by year, instead it goes up, damn right i want cheaper insurance!

i'm in the same boat.... with older vehicles.

but your insurance rise seems to be possibly smaller than a lot of people driving newer vehicles are paying. just pointing out that insurance is skyrocketing across the board, not just on older vehicles.

my other half has a non irish driving licence, but it is an EU license (danish). she's been driving for 20 years.. has lived in the uk / ireland for over 15 years, no claims etc.. but recently an insurance company told us it would be €180 more to insure her on a car because of her danish license, than if her license was irish. obviously if she went through the administrative change of transfering her danish license to an irish one, nothing other than that would change. she'd be no more or less of a liability than she is now.

a lot of what insurance companies do seems to make no mathematical sense at all. it's happened to me many times over the year when they've phoned me and asked me to pay a higher premium, that after a lot of negotiating they end up knocking 50 quid off it and say ok i can do it for this price... and that even makes me angrier.. why are you just randomly putting on 50 quid if you can do it cheaper?

so yeah i understand your frustration, many people do. but i'm not sure what the answer is.

still curious about my earlier question to you though.. is a commercial policy on your van sufficient as a primary policy, regarding having a classic or vintage policy secondary to that?

Yes just confirmed with fbd... Commercial policy fine, as long as theyre satisfied thr vintage is not being used as a main vehicle
