Engineering to Accountancy

I'm not looking for advice on making the move, just opinions. I've become disillusioned with the IT industry, slightly mind you. So I've considered moving to Accountancy. I would be willing to study and pay for exams, but work experience is what I'm ultimately aiming for at the same time.

I see a great benefit to having a qualification in Accountancy. Starting my own business down the line. So, opinions, has anyone ever made a drastic career change in their 30's +?
