Lost / misplaced my NCT report - panicking!

    Hi -

I just got my NCT done last Wednesday. Although the car failed, it was only minor stuff, and I was told that I didn't need to book a re-test.

I showed the NCT report to my local mechanic, and then I put it back into my wallet...or at least, I thought I put it back in my wallet.

I've looked everywhere for it, and can't find it, and I'm a bit panicky now.

Do I need to find this initial NCT report in order for the test centre to re-test the car (it's just minor rust repair underneath the boot), or would they have the report at the centre?

Surely the NCT centre must have the report on file. I also have - thankfully I didn't lose this as well - the receipt from the test centre for the initial NCT test. I'm hoping that even though I don't have the report, that all will be okay for me to bring the car in for a re-test.

I cannot believe I lost the feckin' thing! Arggggghhhh!

    :(

They will have it on their system. No panic

Thanks so much, both of you, for putting my worried and stressed mind at ease. I'm always so careful about keeping important documents in a safe and easy-to-find place. I even have older NCT reports from as far back as 2009 that I just never got around to throwing out. It's just so frustrating that I've misplaced this.

Thankfully, I also have my receipt from the test centre, just in case.

Thanks again - I can breathe a sigh of relief and de-stress now. I'm sure that what will happen is that I will find the report *after* I come back from the NCT centre, and smack my forehead for not thinking to look wherever it was that I eventually do find it.;)

Who told you you don't need to book a retest? If you don't get the failing item(s) retested within 28 days you'll have to do the full test, even for a visual inspection.

    Hi Del 2005 -

Sorry I wasn't clearly expressing what I meant about the re-testing of my car.

When I got the NCT report back from the staff member at the centre, he himself told me that I don't need to pre-book an assigned date for a re-test, as it's only minor repair and just needs to be visually re-checked. He told me that I could call into the test centre at any time, without a pre-booking appointment, and that there would be no fee for this re-test. It even says it on the NCT report at the very bottom that there is no fee, and although the car of course does have to be looked at again to make sure the necessary repairs were done to it, there is no booking fee, it doesn't need test equipment to check it (it's rusting underneath where the boot is), but just a visual re-check.

Sorry again about the confusion in how I worded my initial query.

Thanks for that, awec, OSI and tatranska, for putting my mind at ease about this.

I'll bring in my receipt for the test anyway, even though I know they have a copy of that, as well, of course. I really was panicking about this and had visions of them telling me the car would have to be completely re-tested because I didn't have the initial report with me.

New NCT report, same complaint about losing/misplacing NCT report...with a different question this time.

I know (and am not panicking) that the NCT test centre has the findings and the report on their own system/computer, and so in that regard, I don't need to present it to them or have it with me when I bring the car in for this year's re-test.

My dilemma this time 'round, though, is that even though I did bring the NCT report to my mechanic, and he looked at it, he's now asked me to bring it into him again this week, so he can make sure he'll be ordering the correct parts (door handle, bushings for suspension, and a couple of other bits and bobs).

As I've somehow managed to lose this year's NCT report - yet again (what am I like?!) - can I get the NCT to send me another, replacement print-out of my now lost/misplaced NCT? It's not for the NCT, but for my mechanic.

    Help! And thanks in advance.

Just call into the NCT centre and ask for a copy.
Although I have never had to do this myself I am pretty sure they'll just print it for you.
Ring and ask them just in case.

Panic over! I got in touch with the NCT website and their interactive chat service, and explained my dilemma and worry about losing/misplacing my NCT report.

The lovely person at the NCT HQ simply asked for my email address and my car reg number and told me it'd be no problem for her to send me a PDF form/copy of the report, so I could print it out on my computer, via the PDF.

So relieved now. I know that the NCT test centre didn't need the report, as they of course have it on their system already, but I just wanted to have a hard, physical copy of the report to give to my mechanic (even though he's already seen it once, when I came back from the NCT test centre that same day) so he can go through each issue the car has/work to be done/parts to be ordered, etc. with the NCT report right there for him to refer to, rather than either his memory of seeing it briefly that day.

Thanks. Waiting now for the PDF to be emailed me, so I can print it out, and then give it to my mechanic.

Next year, though, this is NOT going to happen. I'm going to keep it in a safe and easy-to-remember place next time.

Thanks, biko, for your help and your reply.

You don't need to rebook the test for a visual inspection as long its within the 28days

It's more than a visual inspection this time 'round. It's a horn that isn't working and a door handle that is broken (both easy enough to visually see and hear whether or not it's fixed), but then there's something to do with bushings for the suspension that's a bit worn, so that's definitely something that needs to be re-booked for a second test.
