Help identify a bird... without pics!

Rural South Kilkenny yesterday I saw what looked like a medium/large bird of prey hovering for about 5 seconds just like you'd see a Hawk at the side of a motorway. However I thought it looked much bigger than a hawk and there were about 20/25 small birds annoying it and flying around it, the larger bird then took off with the other birds going the other way. It did not attack the other birds.

It looked bigger than a hawk but I'm not great at identifying birds but I really thought it was bigger than one.

Anyone any idea what it could have been?

    More likely a Buzzard.

I've seen Buzzards doing a very Kestrel-like hover in the past, and they're quite widespread, so I'd say Buzzard is right!

Nice few Buzzards around South Kilkenny at the moment, would see them most

days around Kilmacow /Slieverue. One farmer I know has them nesting on his

land and I think 1 of the 3 that I see regularly around my house is a young bird.

I see plenty of them around there as well. Always see them on N25 between the new bridge and Kilmeadan.

I have also seen them quite regularly recently on the road between Mullinabro and Bigwood very close to The Shanty pub.
