Friend of mine was told by gp that he would need to pay €200 for an MRI scan, even though he has a medical card. That can't be right surely? Has an injury from a car accident that isn't healing months later

He'll be waiting for an MRI on the medical card. The 200 is a small price to pay to get the MRI done asap.

Wonder if the gp meant going private for one.

I was quoted €200 to get one done privately as opposed to waiting 18 months or more to get one through the public system.

MRI waiting list is ridiculously long. He can wait and get it done (about 18 months) or he can pay and get it done within a few days.

18 months wait? That's insane..ok makes sense now why gp wanted him to go privately.

MRI costs vary depending on the scans needed, for example a brain scan alone would be cheaper than a brain +c-spine.

You can have it free or have it fast. Can't have both.

He can't afford 200 so reckon will wait out a few more months and hope it heals.

I got mine free on card ,,but only waited approx 4 or 5 months ,,but it was the consultant who i was seeing who referred me for it ,,if i was referred by the gp it would have been long time, but i had already waited nearly a year for the consultant ,My husband is waiting for one it must be well over a year now .

Might as well get himself on the list anyway. No harm in that.

I was told 18 months for a brain scan but someone cancelled, so I got one in 8 months but I had to go the day after getting the call.

Considering they are scanning for a brain tumour as I had vertigo and dizzyness, 18 months wait would have probably have seen me dead if I had a tumour, but thankfully it was clear.
