Apple breaks Back to my Mac for Airport AC users

For a few days, my Airport Extreme 802.11ac device wouldn't show in Airport Utility (Mac or iOS versions), but still worked fine, providing wi-fi and routing.
A reboot had it appearing in Airport Utility for a minute or so, but then disappearing with the "device not found" error and the yellow ! symbol.
A search online brought up this thread, which others using 802.11ac Airport devices may find useful:

From reading through the thread, it seems that Apple recently made a change on their Back to my Mac (BTMM) servers, which causes the Bonjour service to crash on 802.11ac Airport devices if there are any BTMM AppleID entries on it. Removing the BTMM entries will stop this happening until the server side is corrected.

Apart from a loss of BTMM, another issue is that a loss of Bonjour (and other services?) on your Airport device causes a loss of visibility of Time Machine backup discs, so you should check when your Mac last backed up (mine was Fri last, the 12th). I had to choose the disc again and enter its password to get Time Machine going again.

Hopefully Apple will sort things out shortly, and BTMM will work again.
