Is Marty Morrisey the best GAA commentator on RTE?

Marty is like Marmite. Some like him (me included) while others hate him.

I don't follow GAA but is there some unwritten rule that a county's 'nickname' has to be squeezed into every match report? OK say "the deise" or "rebels" the odd time if you want to mix it up, but who the feck ever calls Dublin "the metropolitans" in real life?

He can't pronounce the surname Maher anyway, he calls it Ma-her, most people pronounce it Mar.

I also realised recently that RTE simply don't hire new staff for anything. Look at the news and weather staff-there Donkeys years. And even Michael Lister who I thought was only doing the Sunday Game for ten years is actually at it since 1984!! It would be lovely to see a few new faces at RTE sometime.

Paul Collins on Today FM is by far the worst at county nicknames.

I think Marty and Darragh Maloney are the best commentators.Marty does use that strange phrase "the far over side" and Darragh the words "stunning and "corker" a bit too often, but they are still the best.Ger Canning is awful, put Martin Carney with him for a football match and it's cringeworthy.

That's how Maher is pronounced where I am from anyway.

Good God no. As well as county nicknames he's the worst for throwing in player nicknames too ...Gooch, Star, etc. They're players Marty, not your mates.

Canning doesn't understand the rules. Darragh Maloney is the best by a mile, but he hasn't got much competition.

Tommy Carr is the worst, drier than sand. Like Duignan, don't mind Marty or Canning (altho stick to the GAA Ger it's uncomfortable to see you cover Real Madrid or PSG).
