Buying a UK import from a dealer in the republic, they have had it since April first, they will be sorting out the vrt.

When is the road tax due from? April first or when the vrt & registration is sorted (next week)

An imported car cannot be taxed here until it's transferred to Irish plates.

Tax will be due from the beginning of the month that the car is registered here in Ireland. So if the car is only getting Irish plates when you buy it this month and you will be the first Irish owner then tax will be due from the beginning of August.

You will be able to tax it online a few days after you get the new Irish plates using the last 6 digits of the car's VIN. You don't need the logbook to tax it online as the logbook will not be issued on a freshly imported car put on Irish plates until it is taxed for the first time. Once you tax it then a new logbook will be posted out to you separately but you have to tax it first. Don't be waiting for the logbook to arrive first before taxing it because it won't arrive until you tax it.

when you say logbook, do you mean the VRC?
The one that's sent from Dept of Transport in Shannon??

Yes logbook is just an old term for the registration cert.

I brought in a car from Bury last year and I cannot remember if I had motor tax paid on it or not when VRC was sent to me.

    I must have had

Normally on an imported car registered for the first time here, the way it works is that the registration cert is not issued until after it is taxed first. I've bought a few imported car where I was the first Irish owner and that has been the way it worked for me.

Head to the UK yourself and save more than €500. Especially with the exchange rate the way it is.

That's certainly how it worked when I transferred over my two cars in May. NCT VRT inspection then tax online the following day then the registration/licensing certs arrived within 3 days. In one case it arrived before the tax disc.
