Watching the Olympics I was wondering what is the difference between freestyle and overarm/crawl? To the untrained eye freestyle just seems another overarm competition as I can't remember having ever seen anyone using anything but overarm or crawl in the freestyle. There must be differences even if its just nuances between the two styles. Or else why would you bother continuing with the freestyle at all right? I'd be interested, anyone able to clear that up?

Freestyle means you can employ any stroke in the race, but you must do the same stroke for the whole race. In old foogie competition you'll often see people doing back breast or fly in a 200 free just to get a time.

You don't see it so much in elite competition because you can't get a record in the other strokes as a freestyle race. It can only count officially as a freestyle time.

I don't think that's correct. Freestyle allows any type of movement so long as you don't touch the floor. In individual medleys it also disallows butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke.

    Almost Correct:

SW 5.1 Freestyle means that in an event so designated the swimmer may swim any style, except that in individual medley or medley relay events, freestyle means any style other than backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly.

SW 10.4 In all events, a swimmer when turning shall make physical contact with the end of the pool or course. The turn must be made from the wall, and it is not permitted to take a stride or step from the bottom of the pool.

SW 10.5 Standing on the bottom during freestyle events or during the freestyle portion of medley events shall not disqualify a swimmer, but he shall not walk.

Touching the bottom is not Verboten as such, but as taking a step is not permitted, it is also highly counterproductive.

Swimming butterfly in a freestyle event is permitted as per above, only medley events exclude use of the other 3 strokes.

It's a hangover from the evolution of the strokes. to be honest, I could happily let the longer distance distance fly, breast and back events get dropped from the OG schedule and have 50/100 only in there. There are too many events in there now. The schedule is too packed.
    That said, Phelps....wow.
