You have to be born with the ability and then get the right training to reach your full potential. Have you seen any X-Factor or American Idol auditions? Plenty of people have had years of lessons and think they are great and are surprised to hear that they are in fact, sh!te.

As with any natural talent you're born with it. It's just a matter of honing that talent and getting the best out of it then.

Best male singer I've heard is Stevie Wonder, best female Nina Simone.

So if I keep practicing singing in the shower I will eventually get better at it?
The family will be delighted with this news.

Apparently we're all born with perfect singing voices but our parents singing lulabys out of tune to us at a young age ruins it.

I was a very good singer as a child, but then puberty happened.

Genetics would play a pretty big part. Being born with ideal vocal cords, a disposition for music and the disposition to be able to put in the hours it takes to be good.

It is possible to train just about anybody to a decent standard these days. But the greats are probably born and just happen to have a lifestyle that encourages their musical talents. I don't think we value the best any more though. Music is produced as a product these days, so all they need is people that can do as they're told.

I adore singing but I am not born for it at all, I am one of the worst singers you will ever hear.

I was a great singer before they brought airs out.

Seriously: there's a guy on the internet called Per Bristow who claims to be able to train people to sing.
    (For a price ..of course)

Anyone know if he's any good?

A rare example of a cover version been much better than the original. And the Original was not bad at all.

Absolutely love this version, just heard it the other day and spotified it straight away.

Don't think it's better than the original mind.

A bit of both. Some people are naturally talented singers but they need training to maximise their talent.

I'm a hideously bad singer there would be no teaching me.

As for great voices Marty pellow in his day had a brilliant voice. I'm not a wet wet wet fan but I can appreciate he had a great voice.

There's an unreal amount of training and technique and breathing stuff behind it
    For classical anyway

I was going to describe that cover as 'Pants', but you beat me to it with your 'balls', maybe 'Balls in Pants' sums it up....so to speak.:)

I would say you do need to be trained (or at least put many many hours of dedicated and guided self training) and most people could sing to a good standard.

For people "born" with a voice, its very easy to be good at something when you actually like it, they do need to train but they are much more likely to put in the hours.

The same for most talents. Natural ability to enjoy it, plus a lot of hard work.

Training is a good idea, but in the end after all that training, who would win the Singing Olympics and should the competitors be allowed their normal gargantuan intake of recreational drugs as they wouldn't necessarily be construed as performance enhancing as such?

As with most talents, footballer or sprinter you are born with it. Training/ environment can make it better. Best singer Bing crosby 1930-1936. Ella Fitzgerald or Anne Shelton 1940 to 1945

That's just modern rubbish, check out Emma Azalia Hackley, she had it down.

I think you have to be born with the natural talent. I think training will improve ability but can't make up for a poor voice quality or inability to hold a tune.

I love singing but unfortunately just can't sing in tune. It would be very difficult to judge a "best ever" singer but probably could be decided based on technical ability and range etc by those who know about these things. Classical singers are probably objectively the best on a technical level. My favourite voices are Etta James, Otis Redding, Freddie Mercury and Bing Crosby.

Yes, I mean I assume that if a person is tone deaf and were trained for how ever long it took, you could, maybe sing in tune if we take that as a basic aim.
But if it takes so much effort it would be abandoned. But even so, you can only do your best, and sometimes your best is not "the gold standard".
Where as people with some natural talent are far more likely to soldier on and be support in this.

You definitely need natural talent, which would need refining but its more like a rough diamond needing polished.

If you looked at my drawings as a child, they are shíte, as expected, but now I am a trained artist. Mainly because I was interested and kept practicing for years and was supported to do so.

    I taught I thought a do be doo . . .

Adele has a belting voice, but have you heard her speak :)

born (& then trained) to knock off the rough edges.

The vocal pyrotechnics of the likes of Whitney Houston are really a gift from genetics. The vocal chord and voice box determine your vocal range and the power of your voice.
I don't believe there is such a thing as tone deafness though, in any but a tiny minority of people. So yes, anyone can be taught to sing but don't expect to be able to sing like Ella Fitzgerald.
