How much visibility do Pilots have of the exterior of their aircraft

Sorry if this sounds a daft question !

Stems from too much watching of the investigation type programmes, but am surprised by how many state that the pilot was unaware of the extent of damage to the tail, wings, engine etc, because they can't see them from the cockpit. Some even show cabin crew going back to look through windows.

I know they can't exactly have rear view mirrors, but is there a reason they can't/don't have external camera's that they can view from within the cockpit, or is this now in place for the modern aircraft ?

I see on newer aircraft they have cameras on top of the tail, as seen on this Airbus A350.

They must be giants if they are the height of the cockpit.

In an A320, you can just make out the wingtips if you crane your neck around but it takes a bit of effort.

The 777-300 Ground Movement Cameras are located behind the nose wheel, and one in the leading edge of each stabiliser. They are there to assist in taxiing. The 777-200 doesn't have them installed.

From the cockpit, it's just about possible to see the wingtips from the cockpit on a - 200, but nothing can be seen from a - 300.

Ones on their own on the 330. The 300 is a long beast so you need to get the taxing spot on especially on sharp corners where over steering the corner is imperative. It would be lovely to have cameras.

The A333 is the same length as the B772, and is very similar to taxi. The 773 is an extra 10m long, and needs to be taxied with even more precision.

That's why the 773 has cameras then I suppose.
