    The RSA have a very useful document on their web site titled Road Safety Advice & Driver Licencing Rules for Drawing Light Trailers. It outlines the rules around who can tow what and with what vehicle.

    Part of it is information explaining the use of the information on the Manufacturer’s statutory plate. In short this information allows anyone to see what the maximum weight of trailer the vehicle can tow is without the need to look at a manufacturer’s handbook.

    Does anyone know how this limit is worked out?

    For example a 161 registered Toyota Rav 4 has a towing capacity of 1600Kg but a 162 registered car has a 2000kg limit. Toyota say the two cars are identical. They just re-certified the later cars. A 25% increase in capacity though is a lot.

    Does anyone know what this limit is actually based on?

    Engine power, gearing and brake efficiency have a lot to do with it.

    In 99% it is about the brakes.
