Saorsat Question

Hi There
Looking for a little info
A friend gave up sky

then found they were in a really poor signal area for saorview in the hills of wicklow

They have gone out and bought a revez q10 receiver and a ka band lnb
and 50 cm dish
hoping to just point it South east and get saorsat instead

as I have installed a few sky dishes for relatives without any issues I was asked to have a look as they cant get it to work

Question 1
is a 50 cm dish too small

Question 2
can the revez q10 receive saorsat

There appears from pictures to be only 1 lnb input
so to add free to view sat will a connection from the old sky dish need to go through a diseq switch to be able to view rte and free satellite through same box

Saorsat is transmitted from a satellite called Eutelsat which is located at 9 degrees East.
It may be called 9E on the sat receiver.

I use a 80cm dish myself for Saorsat, 50cm would possibly be a little small, you could possibly pick up the signal but it would be very unreliable signal using a small dish like the 50cm.

I think all satellite HD recievers can pick up Saorsat (sky recievers won't).

Saorsat can be tricky setting up on a diy basis. You would need a satellite meter to help you with the install for correctly aligning the dish.

Yes you can combine signal from both satellite dishes using a diseqc switch and watch all channels on the same satellite receiver.

If you don't have a meter, I would advise contacting a good installer.

There are other satellites broadcasting in the clear from 9E. You may find it easier to use a normal LNB and aim the dish for 9E to get these. Then carefully replace the LNB with the Ka band. Saorsat is much more prone to rainfade so a 50cm will not give useful results. I would suggest at least 80cm. Although Saorsat runs at ~20000Ghz you can fool the box by tuning in 10765 V 25000 2/3 DVB-S2 QPSK.
If you intend to get the normal UK FTA channels on the same dish you will need a second offset LNB for 28E and a DISEQC switch per tuner. The dish would definitely have to 80cm or more for this to work well. You may find it easier to install 2 separate dishes for 28 and 9.

I do have a meter and used it a few times to install a sky dish

I was also thinking that a 50 cm dish was a little small
but good to know that the revez should be able to view the rte channels with the ka band lnb

I think the way to go would probably to use the existing sky dish and swap the 50 cm dish for an 80 cm
as trying to get the 2 lnb's aligned properly on 1 single dish is probably not for the amateur like me
