Lost rings?!

    Hi there...

I have an odd question but really need some advice!!

My 3 year old son announced several months ago that he threw my rings into the bin in the bathroom; he had a thing about throwing things into toilets & that moved onto bins! I had taken my rings off for a shower & got distracted & forgot to put them back on, then couldn't find them for weeks, then lo & behold the announcement that they were in the bin!

So they've clearly gone to the dump, I've been onto our bin provider & they said that there's nothing they can do; would anyone have any ideas or should I just cut my losses? My engagement ring is pretty valuable & there's the sentimental value of the 3 rings too!

    Thanks in advance!

The chances of finding them are those of finding a very small ring in a public dump.

Can you claim on your house insurance?

Happened to me. Searched everywhere, emptied the bin but in the end just had to claim from house insurance. Think my daughter binned it.

I very stupidly didn't have them named on the house insurance as individual items which in hindsight was insane as my engagement ring along was €10k 😭
Stupid dump, my wedding ring I could replace, I can't replace how sentimental it was but I'm sure I could find something similar. My engagement ring was really special, it was really different & I absolutely loved it. Aaarrgghhh!!!

I'm not trying to be smart here but honestly what do you think the bin company could do? Even if it was dumped yesterday it would be a mammoth task to track down your household waste...but weeks ago!!
There's a good chance a 3 year old may not accurately remember something from a few weeks ago, don't give up searching all the corners of the house!!

Are you not covered under unspecified risks?

Well, they said if it had been yesterday that they know where waste is dumped for x period of weeks (I guess it might be some sort of security thing, if something forensic was dumped etc). They said I could go to the dump & wear protective gear & look... They said it's probably fruitless though & absolutely manky!! They were helpful though & it was my first port of call, the little guy is certain that he threw them out, he showed my which bin he put them in! Wasn't really expecting the bin company to be able to do anything; the call to them was out of sheer desperation!

Ah ok then, I didn't think a bin company would have any such system, or be willing to search, unless it was crime related.
    Sorry no other advice!

Could you get a drain company to put a little camera down the toilet bend to see if rings are in there somewhere?

Unspecified risks usually covers up to a specified amount ... maybe 2000 or 3000 euro.

Well.. at least you have your health, amirite?

Stage 2 is acceptance. And convincing your husband to buy you something special and expensive as a keepsake.

Maybe wait until after the kid gets over this throwing things away phase.

My niece swore blind she threw something away (age 3), talked us through it, showed the spot etc....made the entire thing up so have hope!

Granted, it was a 300k ring so there a bigger incentive to find it ................ but where there's a will, there's a way!

Or she could buy it herself.

My engagement ring disappeared in a friend's house after taking it off to wash my hands (I suspect the dog nabbed it) and paid for the replacement myself. There's no way I'd have expected my husband to cough up for a special and expensive keepsake to replace it.

OP, it's absolutely rotten for you but at this stage there's nothing you can do except suck it up and use it as a funny story in years to come.
