Question re cow's milk protein intolerance...?

    I have recently been diagnosed as being cow's milk protein intolerant.

    This is interesting since my only milk consumption for years has been the tiny amount of milk (I like my tea very hot!) I take in my one and only breakfast cuppa. After that, I drink only herb teas during the day. So, my sensitivity to the protein must be considerable for it to have been detected.

    But, my question is this..........

    Does this mean the I am therefore intolerant of cheese, cream and yogurt? I am very fond of all three, and can't say I've noticed any ill feeling from eating them.

    I just want to know if the protein is in the milk, is it also on the other three?

    The diagnosis I received was for multi food intolerance and five were listed, of which milk was one.

    Who made the diagnosis and what type of tests did they do?

    Thanks for the reply.

    The blood tests were done by St. Jame's in Dublin.

    Coeliac, wheat and barley all proved negative.

    However, I was diagnosed as positive for Mixed Food (not multi as I wrote above) intolerance.

    The foods in question are; Egg white, milk, Cod (! :P), Wheat and Soya Bean.

    I've always had my suspicions about milk and wheat. I have been off wheat entirely for some time now and, as I wrote above, my milk intake is tiny.

    I'm just wondering should I avoid cheese, butter, yogurt and cream also? Or is the protein specific to milk?

    Lactose intolerance is different from a dairy intolerance.

    However can you ring the hospital again in that department and ask for clarification?
    If not then see a GP who will have your test results on file and they can interpret?

    Better to be safe than sorry.

    It depends on what protein it is that you're intolerant to.

    It also depends on what part of the milk the dairy products are produced from.

    (Most) Cheese is made from the casein fraction (curds). This would contain only traces of whey proteins.

    Butter is made from the fat of the milk. There would be traces of different proteins in the milk depending on how the milk was processed prior to churning.

    Yoghurt is a tricky one to explain.

    Is it a protein enzyme deficiency that you have?

    Thanks for the reply.

    Without fully understanding the explanation, I've been told that I have to cut back on (rather than cut out) dairy products.

    No real harm in that, and not too difficult as I don't eat a lot of dairy anyway.
