The man has his wallet stolen in Germany, goes to city hall instead of a police station. Has no English or German and inadvertently signs an asylum form. Shipped to a camp and held for 12 days. When released be is happy and not upset.

This made me wonder if I'd just be glad it was over or if I'd raise a ruckus. I can't see myself taking as well as he seems to have.

I generally let bygones be bygones and just move on but this would be beyond my limit.

Would you take it so well?

Those Germans and their completely open borders, just letting anyone in at this point. I'd bet he's not even Syrian!

So they couldn't understand him, as he couldn't speak German or English.

Makes you wonder how they communicate with all the other refugees from all over the world.

Also would it not have occurred to them that there isn't a war going on in China?

War isn't the only reason people apply for refugee status. Political persecution would be another reason, and I'd imagine that is a very real issue for many Chinese people.

What I don't get is, crude as it might be, why they don't use google translate in situations like this? Very quick, simple fix and while the translations might be broken, it would be very easy to get the jist of what the guy was trying to tell them.

One of the more surreal sights I've seen is walking into fast food restaurants in Beijing at @3am, only to find loads and loads of Chinese people asleep with their heads on bags which were placed on the tables. I was definitely the only customer among them. McDonalds, Burger King, KFC and every other fast food restaurant was the same. Example 1 and Example 2 (from Hong Kong).

    Got it alright.
Just didn't think it was funny, and thought it was in bad taste...
.....next you'll be trying to deny that the joke was ever made.

Would you take it so well?
Honestly, if it was me in China I'd no doubt be upset, but accept that it's largely my fault for filling out a form I didn't understand, and I'd likely be more relieved than upset that I hadn't been sent to a hard labour camp.
Makes you wonder how they communicate with all the other refugees from all over the world.

Well, there doesn't have to be a war going on for someone to apply for asylum status. And most refugees come from specific locations at a specific time, so staff at these centres would have interpreters for those languages on hand. They wouldn't have a chinese interpreter hanging around just because.

I'm really interested in how some idiot at city hall managed to push an asylum form under the guy's nose. Though I can definitely see it happening here.
