Have an 05 Volvo S40 1.8 petrol for 8 years and thinking of getting rid, only problem is the boot door won't open, approx 150 to fix, passenger wiper broke, approx 300 to fix, needs 3 tyres and hasn't been serviced properly for over 2 years hence the reduced engine performance warning light, don't do much driving as I work in town and use public transport, only use it at weekend wife uses it for work but only 10 minute drive to and from. Taxing it is expensive and it isn't easy on petrol.
Was thinking of getting new or 1 year old car but obviously going to have problems trading in. Do I spend the money getting everything done or is this just throwing money down the drain or do I try and sell the Volvo as is and see what I get.
I see that scrappage deals require a valid NCT cert.

If you are looking at trading it in off a new or nearly new car, they are most likely going to bin or trade your old car regardless of it's condition, so the condition won't really affect the value they offer for it. Don't waste money fixing.

Selling privately, you would not see a return on the cost of repairs either, it's a €1500 car in perfect condition.

If you are dead set on changing, do not invest in the old car in this situation.

Best option is to list it honestly on done deal (damaged/repairable section)

    .

you could chance describing your car exactly as you have done here and put a low asking price- I wouldn't be surprised if you sold it quickly as a result. You've "saved" on servicing costs, repair costs and tyre renewal costs over the last few years- something's got to give at some stage which in this case will be your asking price.

You swear the car new I was talking about it, came home yesterday evening flat tyre, could not get the wheel off despite kicking it, using a hammer and even bouncing the spare off it, tried to bring it down to nearest garage to put air in and it wouldn't start, just a clicking sound,
all the lights coming on dash.

If there're any roadworks around you should try this, worked for Homer.:D

You're going to need a longer lever on the wheel brace, and even at that I've had to stand on some when the wheel nuts have been put on with an air gun.

Sounds like a dead battery, can you get a jump start from anybody?

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

If you can do the boot yourself, you might get away with it for 50 if it's the boot wiring harness - a very common failure. A main dealer will charge you 100 labour to do it though. You could get 4 new (good tyres) for 500.

I can't see the passenger side wiper costing 300+ if the drivers side works.

As for the reduced engine performance, it could be 100 things, but could be siomple spark plug or loose air fitting.

You'd be spending 1000 or so to get the car back up to scratch.

Not trying to be smart here, but if you haven't serviced it in 2 years and continue that with a new car, it'll end up the same way after a few years too.

my sister had pretty much exactly the same car - dealer offered her 1500 for it or 1000 off for buying cash - she put it on adverts for 1k and got the asking within an hour. hers was an NCT failure on emissions - she was told it was uneconomical to fix - but someone found value in it. she went back to the dealer and offered him 1500 less than asking and got the car - she basically was getting nothing for hers but sold it herself and got 1k

i wouldnt bother trying to fix it. most dealers dont really care, they see a basic value and put it in a poor/fair/good condition box

If the wheel won't come off you can put the nuts back on and leave a tiny bit loose and drive a meter or so will usually break the corrosion seal, not much good if it won't start though.

Could be a shady dealer who knocks a few miles off and bodges it through the NCT, or more likely tells an unsuspecting punter that'll fly through he NCT and then does a Houdini.

Don't work if I do get a newer car I will not be neglecting it, fell out of love with the Volvo about 18 months ago, first time I ever let a car deteriorate like that and I've been driving for 30 years.

Well, tot up your neglect and subtract it from the current ball-park asking price for that car and it won't be far off what you'll receive.

please get rid of the car immediately. even a 10 minute drive on bald tyres is bad. Its not car neglect, its dangerous to other road users.

To be honest, before you do or buy any car, you should get a book and read a bit on car ownership and maintenance. It is clear to me you have no idea what you are doing during the ownership of a car.....and as a result have destroyed this one.

No point whatsoever in fixing the one you have. A dealer may take it as scrappage and offer some money off....but it wont be much.

    I had a Audi avant a year ago nearly to the day , a 2003 1.9tdi.

I got new job less than mile away , car needed 2 tyres, timing belt, service , tax.

I wrecked my head trying to decided do I put all that money into it to sell, anyway I stuck a ad in window and a week later I sold it for 3k . was honest with buyer .

It was a nice car and I'd serviced it regular enough, it was just everything sort of fell at same time.

I bought a 2006 Citroen c4 1.4 petrol for 2 k, low milage, lower tax . its showroom condition but needed a bit of work , head gasket, and a few rods .

A year on and its driving great all in for 2650 .

No regrets so far . ..........

Driving to wales end of month , we,ll see how smug I am after that !!!!!!

I can't see the passenger side wiper costing 300+ if the drivers side works.

The wiper linkage is the culprit and the a new one would cost you that much alone for the part itself (complete linkage with the motor).
