Ball Marker

Just wondering what you guys mark your ball with. I was playing last weekend and one of my playing partners was using a huge poker chip to mark his ball. To be honest I found it a little distracting especially when he was marking his ball from about two feet away. I had to ask him to move it over out of my line of sight a couple of times even though It wasn't directly in my line, it was just very noticeable. I don't normally get distracted easily on the course but this did distracted me.

I use a 10 or 20 cent piece and most lads that I've played with would use something similar. If a ball was to hit this chip it would definitely slow it down and move it off line.

Those poker chips are very annoying! Keep asking them to move it and they'll get fed up after a while and start using small coins or markers...

Apparently poker chips are a well known cause of slow play :D

I don't know what the objection is to poker chips - I use one and, yes, I get ribbed by my playing partners for not having anything bigger, or bringing a hubcap on the course :D

When not using that I use a 1967 (year of my birth) Kennedy half-dollar, which is every bit as large as the chip but never gets commented on!

I also have a couple of threepenny bits I use occasionally.

I use the poker chip when 10ft plus from the hole, use a normal ball marker if near someones line. Poker chip is easier to dig out of my pocket.

What I hate though is lads that use a tee!!!!

Currently a Danish 5 Kroner coin. I just like to use coins from overseas currencies and something that's a bit different. Something with a hole in it or two tone colour. I guess I just want to be different and to make sure it's not confused with another playing partners 1 EUR coin.

I use ball markers. they are discreet, and push into the ground and mostly invisible.

It doesn't generally bother me what other guys use, it's mostly a coin of some sort I imagine and generally you don't see it, but I'm not a fan when I see big huge things getting in my eye... they are distracting and should not be allowed

I got a poker chip free with a magazine last month. Have no intention of using it. Surely a feature of a traditional ball maker is that it is flat and will allow for a ball to roll over it on the off chance of miss hit etc.?

Use one of these - They are like the tool used by snooker refs when cleaning the white ball.

Also the new poker chip style ball makers include a smaller magnetic marker in the middle for marking the ball closer to the hole.

I use a poker chip sometimes, and never mind moving it off anyones line. However I cant see how it been in your line of sight would make any difference, its a golf course, there will always be things in your line of sight, sprinkler heads, tee markers, bunkers, trees etc. And various other distractions like noise from a nearby hole or playing partner s moving or talking when your playing a shot. In my opinion over a short putt, all you should see and concentrate on ball and the hole, wouldnt bother me if there was 3 big poker chips near the hole, if there not on your line then they are not relevant to your shot. So my advice would be just hit your putt and dont let things like that bother you, it will probably make you a better putter too.

I use a one cent coin. Small and discrete.

Occasionally I have wandered around the green looking for it as it is so small I somethings have trouble finding it. Yep I know an elderly moment there!!

Look, it's not the end of the world but it did genuinely distract me and I just thought that its a pointless fashion statement that could potentially interfer with other golfers.

Other things on the course don't distract me and I'm not easily distracted but a big red and white poker chip isn't really like anything else on the course thats in your line of sight when putting.

I don't think there is any rule in golf that states what you are allowed or not allowed to mark your ball with. It might just be something you need to get use to.
I've a chip, and I might have to move it once every 3 rounds because it's on someone's line.
I find it easier to get out of the pocket, to see from a distance and easier to pick up without nudging the ball. It doesn't make any noise in the pocket also. I can't see what the big deal is.

Sure for the price I had to buy one :)

While you are at it, will you pick one up for Ben please. Next time I play with him, I gonna pick up his poker chip when he is not looking. I'm sure they will accept it in the Sporting Emporium next time I head in there :D

Exactly this. Regularly lost sight of smaller markers when further from hole. Hardly ever asked to move it. Roughly same amount as non-chip marker.

2 more pages on Poker Chip markers....the game is officially f**ked.
its a pointless fashion statement that could potentially interfer with other golfers.

Is this the most mental statement ever made on boards golf?

    that's ridiculous...

maybe a very plain black or green one might be fine but most poker chips are not plain... I can see how it would be distracting.

I like having a ball marker near my line of putt. I can use it to line up my putt, (e.g. 4 inches to left/right of the marker). My aiming point is then nearer to me. The bigger the marker, the better. A couple of times I've even got an "in-off" from a ball marker when I putted offline?
Always look for the advantages rather than the disadvanges in these situations!

Within 10ft of the hole I just use a coin but long distance I use a tee or pitchmark repairer as its easier to see when lining up the putt. Obviously if its near someone's line I'd replace the tee with a coin. I personally don't see any issues with Poker chips being used as markers,

I don't get the poker chip thing. If I was blind as a bat maybe but otherwise...

Surely the point of a ball marker is to be small, discreet, not obstructing and if hit by accident ideally not deflecting the roll or as little as possible. Not something thats nearly as big as the ball itself and the only difference is that for hitting the ball you get a penalty and for the other thing you're not? No?

Its not the worst thing in the world but if its close to the hole or to my line I'd prefer if people used something different, something that blends in a bit. Its all good saying you should only be seeing the ball and the hole but what I should be doing and what I am doing are rarely the same thing, especially in golf.
