Apart from FRS, does anyone else sell them?

Can't say as I've not bought in a while. Will be buying soon to carry out repairs at housing

8:25 each or 8 euro if you're buying a bale is what I bought them for in the spring.

I bought 160 of 4"-5" (6') PDM posts for €7.50 each in my local co-op store last week.
    7' strainers were €22 each.

Were they PDM stakes or just dipped and calked PDM

They have the PDM label attached showing date of treatment, etc.

They're the business. Some of the **** being pawned on farmers is appalling. Some of the imported stakes are too dry and therefore brittle.

Only use PDM here now, a bit like concrete only dear the first day. Only worry now is a lug on a machine taking one out.

Paid €12 today in FRS Ennis mart for 7 foot 'turners' as they call them. Diameter about 6 to 7 inch.

Its lakeland town and country. Richmond street, Longford town (co-ords: 53.726953, -7.808753)

They will charge €8 a post for small quantities. You want to order 100+ to get €7.50

There are 40 posts per bale.

I bought proper strainer posts at €22.50 each a few months back where I needed two strands of electric. I've more to do but will only need one strand would those "turners" do for end posts?

I bought old telephone poles for 20euro during the summer... They were about 20 feet long, some a bit longer some a bit short her maybe. Got 2 posts from (got 3 from some)

Better value if you could get em, in my opinion...

Well the FRS guy told me that's what people were using now. They are that bit lighter then strainers.

You might get away with them on a short pull on good ground but they are not called strainers for a reason.

The strain on a short pull is the same as a long one, but you're right about the strainers being better.

Get two lengths of wire patsy, one 150m and other 70, strain them yourself and report back to tell us which one was more difficult to keep a strain on.
    We'll see then!

The longer wire stretches more, but the pull (Newtons, Kgf, whatever) is the same.

There's more wire, therefore more weight. That's why bigger posts are always used at the end. In practise the smaller posts don't work.
Its all relative to the distance between the strainers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,123 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

The weight only depends on the distance between the individual posts, nothing to do with the end strainers. If the distance between all posts was let's say 15yards, you could go a mile with the wire and the strain on the end posts would be the same as if you only went 50 yards.
