in fairness they do hold a good few field evenings & workshops, in contrast to some other breed societies that do sfa besides collect subs. and reg fees.

Anyone go to any of these? The Ardlea/Elite one is on today. I'm tied down with work this week, but might get free for the Roundhill one.

What would walking around a property developer with millions and millions to spend on his playthings yard teach ya.
Be like sending my local soccer team to Barcelona to see how they do things.
It's a hobby for him and ploughs money into the place. Miles of farm roadways tarmaced. Easy have good stock.

I try to farm only a mile away. No pictures. I'm sure the comic will have a few snaps.

enjoyed the trip to the corridans today some smashin stock mixed with the overfed. I see some of the incalf heifers will be well over 3 before calving hardly the route teagasc are pushing. Farm was well laid out lots of people there.

I was there myself. What did you think of the polled calves?
I couldn't believe how quiet all the cattle were. You could walk through them all and they didn't take one blind bit of notice.
Got talking briefly to an Australian guy. He said he was having an absolute fantastic time. Good to hear.

yes definitely agree on the overall quietness of the stock fierce quiet. Met some dutch lads and they were quite impressed aswell. Easy to pick some prize winners there. Wasn't allowed into 1 paddock as i'd the little one with me and one of the cows didn't like kids.

Were the polled calves off Idalgo PP? He has serious terminal figures so far anyway.

No, they were off Ivoire PP and Hinz PP.

Video here of Idalgo PP. Not a bad looking bull.
What's the story with Homozygous Polled bulls? If you use them on horned cows, can some of the progeny turned out to be Homozygous Polled too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,316 ✭✭✭tanko

NCBC say that all Idalgo's calves will be polled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

The calves will be polled, but will the offspring have the homozygous Polled genes (PP). I think it's a 50/50 chance.
For example if you have a horned purebred cow and you cross her to a Polled bull, some bulls from this cow will produce all polled calves while others will only have 1/2 of the calves polled. I think the PP status will show up in the genomics.
I thought the cow had to be homozygous polled too, to produce a full polled bull, but she doesn't. Not sure though.

    From ICBF;
As animals can have two alleles present at a genetic marker (say an P or p allele) three genotypes are possible for each marker. For example, at the polled/horned locus in cattle, two common alleles are P ( the dominant allele preventing growth of horns) and p (the recessive allele allowing horn growth). The three possible genotypes are PP (homozygous dominant), Pp (heterozygous or carrier), and pp (homozygous recessive).

It's funny the way the polled gene works sometimes, I have two continental cows with the same half Angus grandmother, their calves are only 6% Angus but don't have horns most years.
Maybe I'm wrong but I would expect Idalggo's calves to be heterozygous polled so the second generation off him would have a 50% chance of being polled.

Ya, you're right. First generation will only bring Heterozygous polled cattle. If you use a fully polled bull on the next generation of heifers then, half will be Heterozygous polled and half Homozygous polled.

    Explains it here;

There's a Roundhill/Castleview sale of 84 females on sept 16th in Roscrea. Has anyone ever bought at this sale or are going along to this one with a trailer and chequebook?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Dozer1

tempted to go, but justifying the price is another thing,
also the milk figures aren't great to me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

This will whet your appetite; :D
Lot 3 and her mother. Spotted her at the open day. Fine looking heifer but will make big money, I'd say.
Have a feeling though with the weaker sterling, prices might be down a bit this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Dozer1

I'd rather a younger heifer myself let her settle before getting her incalf. It will be interesting if the open day will have increased interest.

Milk doesn't seem to be a big consideration these days, maybe the genomics scheme will change that a bit.

If you go and lots 16 and 26 are going cheap maybe you could drop them up to me on your way home.

Anyone go to Roscrea last night? Was hoping To but away with work. Saw Twitter report. Prices seemed good enough, good for sellers anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,316 ✭✭✭tanko

3,400 and 3,200 for the two I'd picked out of the catalogue. I'll have to start saving for next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Dozer1

didn't make sale either, youngest was unwell all week so couldn't go, some strong prices from the report on twitter ah well maybe in 2 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

Hard to get a real feel for prices unless you are actually there. They've a habit of only reporting the good prices. If you are ringside and see 3 lots in a row go cheap or even unsold, you take a completely different view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭GiantPencil

Read that the figures for clearance rate for the Castleview herd was 85% I think and their average didn't hit 4k so you would have gotten a nice animal and not affect your pocket too much. Roundhills clearance was a lot lower but their average price was pretty high so they were looking for big money it would seem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I've been at the last 2 of these sales, 2 and 4 years ago. The roundhill herd seemed to have a lot heavier animals for their age and prices were a good bit higher. Castleview on the other hand have always been strong on the maternal side with good calving and milk figures. That's starting to pay dividends now with the higher star ratings.

If you remove the top two prices the roundhills average would drop materially. Might give a better reflection of sale average.
