Irish Martial arts comission:someone not an MMA fan

The Irish Martial Arts Commission, which has been asked to consider taking MMA under its umbrella, wrote to the International Olympic Committee in April of this year saying that MMA, in its current form, is not a sport, and like dog fighting did not deserve to be legitimised.

It said it agreed with reports describing MMA as "pornographic, sadistic and voyeuristic to its core".

Cant MMA just set up its own governing body?

The comparison to dog fighting is ridiculous, MMA fighters are willing participants in a highly trained sport.

they've refused to deal with Muay thai and full contact kickboxing for years. IMAC don't like anything to martial

They'll set up their own body before too long. Would you really want to get in bed with the IMAC when they spout shíte about "dogfighting" and "pornographic".

    Like, come on.

It's actually rather insulting as an animal lover who has seen the horrific nature of dog fighting to actually compare mma to dog fightign really is horrible :( I mean but its a typical irish response they IMAC gave, uneducated and foolish.

Is Tom McGurk a posh boy? He sounds very snobby.

edit: after listening Andrew was full of logical and excellent points but Tom was just talking out his hole.

He is/was the rugby host for RTE. I'm not entirely sure what his relevance to the debate on MMA is however.

I get a lot more worried for boxers health a lot of the time where they get back up before the 10 count and get repeatedly punched in the head again than I normally ever am for a mma fighter. There was some exceptions like I think it was the lombard v magny fight i think it was where the ground and pound just went on to long but generally its stopped very quickly.

McGurk making an embarrassment of himself on the MMA debate once again after his debacle with John Kavanagh last time out.

It feels like this same debate happens at least once a year now. McGahon was excellent as always but I don't know why people bother wasting their time on McGurk and co any more.

I suppose if you leave the idiots talk and not respond then the idiots will be the only voice heard by the general public, McGahon was just putting the good parts across so the general public dont only hear McGurk just sh!tting on mma.

all the talk about angry young men, I can't help but think if it wasn't mostly working class lads who enjoy MMA there would be less opposition from 'respectable' society

MMA involves too much actual fighting for the IMAC they much prefer pretend fighting.
The sad part is, the above isn't even a joke. It's literally a part of their code of conduct that you can't train in any form of "combat". They really need to look up the meaning of the word martial, then remove it from their name.

Without McGurk it's a much easier listen.

Two comments on this and the Today FM one.

    Sport is defined as
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

So doesn't matter who says it is or isn't MMA fully meets the definition so therefore is a sport. Now it may not be a sport some people like which is a different matter.

In Taekwondo, which is an Olympic sport, you are allowed kick to the head. Taekwondo is one of the martial arts that forms MMA.

I would be fine with the stance taken by the Irish Martial Arts Commission if it was backed up with facts and evidence but it's just a load of backward uniformed opinions. It goes as far as being insulting, for example, "consumers of MMA want to see people not just beaten, but physically damaged", I mean I think that requires an official apology to be honest. Who are they to suggest why MMA fans like MMA.

There is obviously politics at play here. The Irish Martial Arts commisssion dont want to recognise MMA because they fear that the rise of MMA will mean that their commission is eventually dominated by MMA representatives. Its an obvious turf war and the Commission members dont want any new members upsetting their apple cart.

MMA would be better off establishing itself independently and that way they can apply for Govt. funding alone rather than having a civil war on the Commission when it comes to splitting up the spoils of whatever grants they can get.

That would be great in an ideal world. But it's not as a simple as that.

MMA: "Hi. Will you recognize us as a sport."
ISC: "Martial arts have to go under the IMAC. Go to the IMAC"
IMAC: "Martial arts can not involve training in forms of combat"
MMA & Muay Thai: "Do you know what martial actually means?
IMAC: "It's my game and you can't play. You're all poo-poo heads"
ISC: "Well if they say you are not a sport, then maybe you aren't a sport "
    ...
USADA: "Hi. Who should drug Conor McGregor for us"
ISC: "Drug tests in sports, that would be us. Where do we send the bill"
